Those old 6.9's were great engines !

Quick test to check glow plugs, use a test light. Unplug all the glow plugs, put your test light clamp on battery positive terminal, then touch each glow plug with test light on the glow plug terminal. If test light lights, good…if it does not, it’s bad.

That’s a great idea! I never thought of doing it like that. That’s my go to in the future!

Hey brother don't beat yourself up over technical boo-boos. Sometimes I lose videos and pics with no rhyme or reason. You put out some great content, and some of it is definitely helpful! For example, I own a 2023 Duramax, so the vid you filmed regarding an injector pig tail was very helpful! About the job, I cut my teeth on those 6.9/7.3s in the 80s and 90s. Loved those engines back in the day.

Loe that he's still running that 6.9, but that poor old girl is about rusted to the ground!

My brother ran an early 80s IH diesel with glow plugs. I think he told me they were wired in series so if you lost one all the amperage was divided by the remainder of the glow plugs burning them up More quickly

Typically indirect injection engines have higher, not lower compression. And the glow plugs heat the air in the cylinder, not the fuel.

If any glow plugs other than the Motorcraft 10.5 volt ZD29 are installed, they won't work. Take one glow plug out and connect it and ground the threaded end and turn on the ignition. If the glow plug glows bright, then perhaps there is air in the fuel system?
@hrdieselАй бұрын
The old glow plugs I took out were aftermarket and they were all bad except for one. It’s been working great since the new ones were put in and the system is upgraded

Check glow plug controller on back corner of intake on driver's side you'll lose a little anti freeze if you change it

I'm not a mechanic, that said, I have 1985 international Bluebird school Bus that has a 6.9 in it. Can you tell why it burns off a white cloud of smoke?? Thank you in advance
@hrdieselАй бұрын
That’s a good question! Does it lose any antifreeze? My first thought would be antifreeze but it could also be injectors
@poweredbyford87Ай бұрын
White cloud when cold is usually leaky injector(s). White cloud when hot is usually injection pump. That's assuming it's a fuel issue, of course, and it's not eating any antifreeze or anything like that

Hook them up with a momentary old school starter button without the timer the timer stays on too long and too often what i used to do back in the day

If it was my truck I would’ve done that but this was a customer and this is what he requested
@richierawls8661Ай бұрын
Direct switch to glow plugs light on dash count to 10 starts turn off.
@hrdieselАй бұрын
That’s an option but the customer wanted it to be automatic.
@russellbruney1997Ай бұрын
Replacement timer but they were not tuned real well back then i always had problems when they were new 7,3 had a better timer setup that did not eat glow plugs. You can test glow plugs without removing by using a hot lead and power them one by one you will see current arc.@@hrdiesel

Key cycle 2 3x see if glow plugs need more heat

The glow plugs had completely left the chat. They had no resistance
@anthonylawlor9130Ай бұрын
Burnt wiring is your problem….something is grounded wrong or shorted out.
@hrdieselАй бұрын
The temp controller was shorted out and causing the glow plugs to stay on to long
@RudyChmelykАй бұрын
change your glow plug controller
