I never really collected GI Joes as a kid, Batman and TMNT were my thing (I was born in '87) but I had received as a present around 1992 along with two figures, the Brawler and inside was this cool pamphlet for a Cobra Commander so after begging my mother for him, some time later, the mail man delivered a small box and inside was this really cool navy blue hooded evil leader. I wasn't even a big fan of the brand, but even I couldn't escape the mystique and overall look of this toy

I got the 1984 mail order with flag points. That was a big deal as a kid. I don't remember the gold paint rubbing off being that big of a deal, but then Cobra Commander just sat in his throne room and gave orders, so he didn't get that much rough play ;-)

Cobra Commander was always one of my favorites. I was born in 1981 so the original battle helmet version was out before my time. But i did get the upper half in a trade. And i took the ass and legs from my body parts stash that were part of the dress blues version of Gung Ho. Lol. As for the hooded version, I don't know why i never got the flag point mail in hooded commander as i saved flag points and did the mail away stuff...had the fridge and super trooper...ETC. Then i had the cobra commander with the metal outfit with blue and silver...the one from 88-90 era, the one that cobra commander got in the python patrol episode of the cartoon when he whipped serpentor's ass. I didn't get the cobra commander with the yellow helmet with red visor (the one you could pretty much see his face), but i did get the hooded one with the talking backpack. I just took a screwdriver to him (same as I did to General Hawk, Stalker and Overkill) and took that big ass back pack off him. All 4 of those of talking ones were really good. General Hawk looked great, so did Stalker. Overkill was cool too, since i had got the BAT from that era as well at the same time i got overkill. And to me, that hooded talking cobra commander was one of his best versions. If they would have designed the battle helmet and original hooded versions of cobra commander with the long boots like they did the talking one, those two would have looked so much better than they did with the dress shoes.

I agree with you on the head sculpt. I have the v3? That came out in the 90s with The Battle Corps line. It is really cool, but lacks the majesty of the first.

That head sculpt has always bothered me. The position of the eyes makes he head under the hood pretty impossible. How long is his neck supposed to be? Are his eyes on his forehead? These questions burn.
