If you row through someone like that, you are really better. Kolbe tried everything, had the time to respond, but couldn’t. I saw this one live on TV while I had just single sculled for a year. I really felt Kolbe’s pain. A great rivalry that one. Bigger than Coe-Ovett. Legends cannot occur without heroic opponents.

Pertti Karppinen produced extraordinary ergometer result of 5:52 which is 1:28 at the age of 52!! I wonder how much he could do at the top of his prime... better than Waddell? Deserved win! One of the best scullers!
So why in the world Karppinen keeps looking back and checking on Kolbe !? He is one of the finest rowers ever and he had to know better to row a classy way, the most efficient way, his own race; instead on bullying his competitor. Very smart, yet I find it so un-Finnish. Great video. Thank you!

@NAXE5 Somehow, back then Karppinen used to do 5400 on the Nielsen erg, when 5000 was already World-class. Somehow, at over 50 he felt like going back to racing and became Finnish national champ in the 4x again. I've also read this (in World Rowing Magazine) and yes, I buy it...

Surely I do. Nearly all of us do. But PK looks back almost after each and every stroke. Watching him, I feel worried he might catch a crab. :-)

@NAXE5 I am 100% sure, I read on worldrowing site and I doubt they would lie.

@oomblah Karpinnen used an abus stamfli which would have been fisa minimum weight, like Kobe's Empacher. Wooden sculls didnt make as much difference as you might think, particularly with Karpinnen rating 29 for much of the race.

@Veslanjejezivot Are you sure he went 5:52 at 52? According to Concept 2, the world record for ages 40-49 is 5:57.5. The record for ages 50-54 is 6:07.7 Somehow I just don't buy that he is ~15s faster than the world record for his age.

What a disgraceful thing I have just seen. :-) I admire Fins, and consider their quality the utmost top notch, and Fins were something like the most Olympic golds per capita until Sydney or Athens, and they are like naturally driven people.
