I have a yellow 1985 Cavalier with 74,000 miles on it. It's in good shape, no rust, two owners, my grandfather and then my mother. They only drove the car in the summer. Some of the interior ceiling is coming off, but other than that, it's in good shape. Car is in NE MIchigan.

I owned one of these 1985-1995. Very dependable mostly. Replaced the muffler several times. My brother said it sounds like a tin can, Nonetheless, it was fearless during the blizzard of '93 and plowed through snow storms when I was going to college in PA. Mine was white with a blue vinyl top, had a red stripe along the side molding, and raised white letter tires. Very sharp for an economy car.

If your paying $2k for an 82-87 Cavalier, you couldn't go wrong with it. I bought my 87 Cavalier for that much, and it's a great running and rolling example. They are worth saving, not many left on the roads anymore.

I have a 1987 Chevy Cavalier CS and I love it. I bought it off my mom for a dirt cheap $100. It had been sitting in our garage for 4 years due to an oil pressure issue. After warming up, the oil pressure will drop to zero while idling. I band-aid fixed it by putting 20W 50 oil in it and drove it away. It still needs an IAC motor or throttle positioner (It likes to almost stall out then rev back up at the last second) but otherwise she runs great. I'll post a vid once I get a camera.

I had an 84 Buick Skyhawk. The Skyhawk came with the same 2.0 OHV as the Cavalier. The 2.0L wasn't a bad engine. More fuel efficient and faster with the 4 speed manual transmission. The auto was the 3 speed auto, quick off the line and lags around the 40 to 45 mph. The trunk size is good. Those aren't the factory hubcaps. The factory was styled steel wheels with a literal cap over the hub.

No, the J car was designed in the US and the Vauxhall/Opel was part of that development program [programme]. Used different engines. We got OHVs because GM thought NA customers too stupid to know the difference. Great story of the Cavalier and J Car development in Brock Yates book The Decline and Fall Of The American Automobile Industry.

i wish we had more clean older cars here. i like these older vehicles, simple, cheap to maintain and reliable. newer cars are more of a pain in the ass...... expensive to maintain, in fact i believe the more complicated and expensive repairs quickly negates fuel savings...... and you have to make payments on the complicated junk. i have owned numerous cavaliers, corsica's and even a citation and they were easy and cheap to work on.

perhaps you aren't aware of where i live. i live in one of the worst climates for cars on the planet, everything around here rusts out no matter what you do. i once drove a 1991 cavalier that i paid $1,500 for 7 full years and over 100K miles. by the time i parted ways the car had 220K miles and i SOLD it still running well. these older chevys were tanks. none of the vehicles that i am mentioning actually died, they all ran and simply rotted out after 15-20 years of being exposed to the corrisive chemicals they put on the road. had they not used that stuff i might still have some of those vehicles. in fact i currently own a 1996 camaro Z28 that came from california 212K miles on it currently and its going to last a LONG time. i put it away for winter. you can have your japanese cars, and NONE of them and i mean NONE of them is as reliable or tough as a 3800 series II V6
@toyoscio
@toyoscio 9 жыл бұрын
+andrew donohue You got lucky. Many owners these cars were junk. Perhaps you recall when the J cars first came out with the 1.8. They were soundly ridiculed for being lousy. Why else do you think the 1.8 was only around for 1 year? That being said, rust and mechanical issues claimed a lot of these. No argument the 3.8 3800 was one of GM's best engines, but the 2 and 2.8 were for the most part, garbage. I beg to differ on your comment about the reliability and toughness of Japanese cars. Though not a car, the Toyota Landcruiser is a tough highly sought after vehicle, especially the mid 70s to early 80s. The 20 and 22R Toyota 4s are renowned for their reliability and toughness. They put the Cav's 2 liter engine to shame :}
@ricorob100
@ricorob100 7 жыл бұрын
toyoscio why are you comparing a land cruisers engine to a cavaliers 2.0? That's like comparing an LS4 to a Toyota 1.8 ltr. We've had many cavaliers in our family and one being a brand new 1988 coupe with a 2.0, and automatic which ran with no major issues other than a muffler all the way to 188k, and would have gone longer if my cousin had not hit a semi with it. It's called taking care of it, and maintaining it. Most people that trashed their Cavaliers didn't maintain them. My dads 1991 Chevy lumina had 200k when he sold it "still running" and it's 3.1 was a 2.8 with different/bigger head. Not much of a difference.

Ricorob Toyo douche is just upset anyone likes anything other than a Toyota. My 84 Celebrity Hess & Eisenhardt conv has the 2.8 and it is a GREAT motor one of the best I've had of my 85 cars I've had since I was 16 in 1977. My Celebrity gets near 28 MPG highway and is a super smoother motor. ZERO rust for a 32 year old car but it was in California it's entire life. Solid build no rattles I love these early 80's Chevys.

Something about the fabrics in all the '80s cars that couldn't stand up to UV rays. Fabric coverings two decades later were (and remain) somewhat more resistant to the brutal sun. One time our plant had to run off tens of thousands of replacement body-side moldings for a particular car because not enough UV-resistant additive had been included in the PVC which was used in the accent strip laminated to the stainless steel molding. The silver PVC turned orange after a few months exposure to the sun. Present day the sun's rays are even more powerful for the thinning of the ozone later and it's doing a number on paint jobs no matter how old a car is.

Crap in what way? Certainly not as far as reliability and durability were concerned, that's for sure. Both the 2.0L OHV I-4 and the 2.8L OHV V6 were both very sturdy engines and were known to last a very long time as long as basic maintenance was done on them. Were they sophisticated engine designs? No they weren't. They were pushrod 2-valve per cylinder engines and they were somewhat crude & rudimentary designs, however they were very simple with not a lot of expensive & complicated components to have go bad on you. Both of these engines were solid designs that were known to easily go up to 300k miles if properly maintained.

Cereal Marshmallows Why do you get so personally offended? I like the car, and if you can get that much money out of it good for you, but these aren't collectible and nobody cares too much about 1980s J bodies. Calm down. You don't need to be such a psychopath.

Funny your camera seems to have issues when you're showing a GM product. Your camera knows this is a pile, with its mediocre quality.

toyoscio so mediocre that Toyota rebadged one for the Japan market. Can't get over the fact that it's a decent economy car.
