I got my Grandmother's 1984 Cavalier Wagon after she could no longer drive. I used it all through college. Was a great little car and the only thing I spent money on was to have the AC fixed. It had a leak in one of the seals.

Really nice styling of these cars. I like the sharp angles of the outside panels. I wish Chevrolet would make them like these again. New models are jelly bean shaped with ugly front and rear ends for the most part.

The J-car was GM's latest "world car." There was also the Chevrolet Monza and Aska in Latin America, the Vauxhall Cavalier in the U.K., the Opel Ascona in Germany, the Isuzu Aska in Japan, the Daewoo Espera/Aranos in South Korea, and the Holden Camira in Australia and New Zealand.

GM did a good job with the 80's J cars. My sister and her husband had a loaded sedan in tu tone blue like this wagon. They were worthy competitors to the Accord and Camry. Unfortunately GM kept them around way too long.

I have owned the square body 1987 Z24 cpe. 2.8V6 White exterior blue cloth interior. Added a K&N air filter on the intake side added a performance chip to improve power out of the 6 cylinder.. Then put a turbo muffler out back. Wish i still had it now. Would've been a great cruiser plus enter a car show since i found & bought the '87 Cav brochure at a auto flea market!

The older and more "classic" these cars become, the more I like them. It's a shame they fitted them with heavy X-car suspension pieces and crappy engines, but they were very attractive and obviously what people really wanted, given how popular they were. It would've been cool if they did like the Cruze (which is a GM Korea product) and fitted the Opel-based cars with mechanicals from their then-Asian subsidiary, Isuzu.
@303nitzubishi47 жыл бұрын
The cavaliers cousins all had opel engines available within the first couple model years. The Sunbird and Skyhawk sold tons of units with the 1.8 and 1.8 turbo opel engines. The later Sunbirds were available with the larger 2.0l unit for a couple years. Great cars if you had the time to take care of them but few owners did

I guess these bug-eyed Chevy Cavaliers were long gone by the time I became of age to notice cars but I do remember the quad headlight one with the same rear end. These were some of the crappiest and most crude little Abominations. I did like Oldsmobiles version of the J car called the Oldsmobile Firenza. I think it only came in the hatchback version and I don't think I've ever seen one in person but like the Buick Skyhawk which was another J car abortion it had a class your look then the Cavalier. These were the cars that you would get stuck with if the guy behind the counter at the rental car desk didn't like your attitude LOL

One of my first cars was an 82' Cavalier coupe. 1.8L, 4 speed manual and absolutely zero options. Not even a trip odometer. Check engine light was on from day 1 and was on when I sold it a few years later. Zero power but got excellent economy. One year only 1.8L because GM quickly realized it was a groany, grouchy, noisy, rattlley under powered piece of junk.

They were overpriced and underpowered because that 88-hosrspower 1.8-liter engine - which only lasted a year - couldn't get the car out of its own way. The added features made it $2000 more expensive than a comparable Toyota. Improvements turned the Cavalier into a decent car but the initial model soured a lot of car buyers on Chevrolet and GM. The J-car was a golden opportunity for GM to challenge the Japanese but GM blew it! You never get a second chance at a first impression.
