The Trans Lite ad was a surprise. I don't watch any TV anymore, haven't for 15-20 years, now,so that was kinda humorous, for a lack of a better term...

@@frankferrandiz6270 I don't see Billy in this race but if you check out figureeightracer account he has a lot of older videos where you can find Billy Steen. Here's one from 2000 that Billy almost won: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gH2Xm42KotWFqLM

1000 Dollar prize Money? that's insane. Even by today's standards, the top prize Money you get today racing figure 8 is around 18'000.

4k a year back in the Great Depression is equivalent to about 90k a year nowadays. 40 years ago, a grand was some decent cash 🤷♂️

As ABC transitioned it's sports coverage to ESPN, an old "Wide World Of Sports" staple makes the leap to cable TV. As with racing in general, by this time, the cars were a bit more specifically evolved than the earlier days in the 1960's, when the cars were more like ten or so years old NASCAR sportsman stockers. In the old days, WWOS would have only broadcast the feature race without any qualifying. Land prices, litigious times and anything else you can throw in the mix has eliminated so many of the small tracks especially Islip Motor Speedway which was the most revered birthplace of Demo Derby and Figure Eight on its 1/5 mile oval. Islip had already been plowed under by 1984 as mentioned in this clip.

PJ Riverdale there’s a Facebook group for Islip Speedway with lots of great content, if you didn’t know already. I believe there’s some old WWOS videos posted. Tom Kraft, who was declared winner and eventually disqualified in this video won the last race ever run at Islip Speedway.
