Awesome video. I did the same thing a while back due to the computer shutting the truck off randomly every few minutes driving down the road. Mechanic never figured out what was wrong with it. HEI distributor worked like a charm. I just keep a backup one in the truck as some people say the electronics of these A team distributors go bad. New carb was installed a few days ago. Haven't gotten it adjusted just right yet, but it drives down the road so it's good enough for now. Would love to see more videos on this truck. Will be keeping an eye out!

Those carbs are easy to rebuild and all the feedback carbs I have seen have an idle mixture screw. The only difference is the evap solenoid. Remove it, block off plate and rebuild as normal. They work find without all the vacuum lines. I have converted a couple. WIth a duraspark harness and module, you can use a ds2 distributor and it plugs into the factory harness.

it took me a while to get the vacuum advance set. I had to drive it around and keep making adjustments with an Allan wrench until I got the pinging under control.
@DreamRoadRonny9 ай бұрын
@@CarolinaMedia All of the forums mentioned that they had pinging after removing the computer controlled setup. You were able to work that out without issue?
@CarolinaMedia9 ай бұрын
@@DreamRoadRonny Yes. Make sure to set the timing first without the vacuum hooked up. I ended up driving uphill in a high gear til I heard knocking (pinging). Make small adjustments to vacuum advance until pinging stops. Good luck!

I’m about to do these exact mods to my grandfather’s 86 f150. I may have missed it, but what all ends up being reattached to the new carb?
@CarolinaMedia4 ай бұрын
Fuel filter / fuel line, throttle cable , vacuum lines and heat tube for the choke. if you go with electronic choke , you’ll need to attach the wiring for that.
@WittFam4 ай бұрын
@@CarolinaMedia how many vacuum lines will it have? One to the Distributor and one to the brake booster. Any other than those?
@CarolinaMedia4 ай бұрын
@@WittFam. Before you start the swap, take pics and maybe label the vacuum lines as you unhook them. There are a few that connect to the vacuum tree under my carb. One that goes to the heat and vent actuator inside the dash. One that goes to the canister from the gas tank. (Canister is passenger side next to the radiator.). One that comes from the PCV.

So why didn't you go with a Dura spark 2 dizzy? I like the single wire HEI for simplicity or even build something using an old D2 module box as a heat sink and a "divorced" 4 pin hei cheap module... that way the module doesn't get hot like this set up will.. either way I think the hei system is simpler but I doubt it'll last as long. I've never in my life had to replace a D2 module but I've replaced a lot of GM HEI modules because of their placement they get hot and burn out eventually. I like HEI for simplicity but I've never had to work on a dura spark 2 distributor or module in hundreds of thousands of miles.
@CarolinaMedia4 ай бұрын
Hey thanks for the duraspark info. I might try that on the next one. I got the idea for the HEI watching Derrick from Vise Grip Garage do one on an old ford truck. I haven’t had any issues. But I have heard of other people carrying an extra module. The HEI is so cheap, you could keep an extra distributor in the tool box just in case.
@DieHolden4 ай бұрын
@@CarolinaMedia it occurred to me after I posted the reason most people don't just use a D2 dizzy is because of the different resistance...a D2 doesn't use the full 12 volts and needs a resistor in one of the wires to the coil to cut the voltage back to iirc 9 volts. But if you have a thick film integrated or TFI for short it already has everything you need. So people would use a dura spark 2 dizzy and a TFI coil and that's what you took off and end up with actually a better system than HEI because the D2 system module retards the timing a few degrees until the vehicle is started and saves wear on the starter also. I used to get about 50,000 miles from an HEI system module but your dizzy is not on the exhaust side so you might get more life out of yours. Some people also use a D2 dizzy and a heat sink with a 4 pin HEI module on the fender well somewhere to keep it from getting hot at all. This was another way you could run the full 12 volts. I enjoyed your video. I'm glad it works for you.

Was short lived, every time you start it, it runs different, most times, slightest hill, you drive it floored just to get 40 MPH, right now it wont start, pretty sure the starter relay is to blame, on the 4th one of those, 3rd starter, I will never buy another ford with the inline six, its a pile of shit. Going to bet my head is cracked, often need to fill the radiator, mysterious missing coolant, good work ford milling the head on the inline, cracking is common with efi. I got 2 more surgeries in the future, just finished 2 lately due to an infection ruining what was to be simple, needing my van to load my wheelchair its gone to hell, so I'm driving a 2 year old Odyssey, if I can get the ford running good enough to sell it, I'll strip it and get it out of my hair, its been a 4 year lawn ornament!
