Spend A Buck had basketball sized balls, he was passed and beat on the turn, within a couple of jumps regained the lead and never gave it up. The interior fractions were grueling to boot...simply sensational!!

I saw him win the Miller High Life stakes at River Downs as a 2 yr. old. Great horse. Huge will to win. My dad knew horses and he said that day he was special.

I'm afraid the woman on the broadcast doesn't know much. :22 4/5 quarter, :45 2/5 are BLAZING for a 1 1/4 mile race. It 1:09 is really quick. Creme Fraiche ran a good race, but had no excuse. Rail all the way around. Spend a Buck was a monster of monsters. What an absolutely incredible racehorse, to hang on and win off those fractions. Champions get beat off those fractions . . .

Hard to believe Creme Fraiche came back 2 weeks later to win the Belmont with relative ease. This race was a bruiser.

Creme Fraiche had no excuse here. Spend a Buck's fractions were unbelievably quick for the first 2 quarters of a 1 1/4 mile race. Fraiche never left the rail.

Bolting Holme, an also-ran here, won a stakes at 9-1 at Aqueduct on the inner dirt in 1986, then was laid up until 1989, when he came back in a $5,000 claimer at Mountaineer, right before returning to Garden State and sweeping a bunch of starter-handicap races. I spent a few years regularly at Garden State. My late Mom won thousands there, as did I. Then the Turf Club opened in 1990 and I switched to Parx, until the Beyer figures hit the Form in 1992, when I switched to sports betting.

Crème Fresich came back to win the Belmont Stakes. Spend a Buck bumped him off the turn and I always thought that distracted Creme because he was moving well. Spend A Buck was tired . That was his second mile and a quarter race in like a month and a half.

We drove up from Baltimore to see this race. I recall how much anger was exhibited within the racing community when Bob Brennan of Garden State Park put up the bonus for the horse who could win The Ky Derby and The Jersey Derby. Out of that, though, came the Chrysler and Visa Triple Crown Challenges (now defunct).

Bob Brennan wasn't the owner of the horse; he owned Garden State Park. Dennis Diaz owned Spend a Buck.

Lukas is the most horrible trainer in the history of horse racing. He had no closer in the race. He sent Huddle Up in 1:09 flat just to ruin Spend A Buck but he couldn’t do it!!

I later worked with their son Roy Sedlacek and won many races with him including the Grade ll Bayshore stakes

Well Roy only won 135 races in his Career as a trainer .Mike Sedlacek his brother he won 780 races

I remember once when his folks sent three horses up from Florida. Two for Mike and one for Roy. He tried (Roy) to beat his brother to the van to get first choice. But he got the runt of the litter. Turned out the runt ran 2nd first time out at 99-1. She won a couple of races and ended up getting claimed . I don't think Mike's two made it to the winner 's circle.

Great ride by Pincay. The horse was talented without a doubt but it took a cool ride at the top of the stretch when it looked as if the future Belmont winner had Spend A Buck put away. Yes there was a lot of grumbling about the connections ditching the triple crown series. I remember. But it was also a sign of the times in sports in general. More and more money in sports was being generated and athletes were following the money. Equine athletes were no different. Let’s be honest. Its about the money and not the integrity of the sport. The Triple Crown didn’t pay.

No, both races were run for years. The Jersey Derby simply ended with Garden State Park, maybe even before.
