Graduated high school in 84. Always wanted one of these babies (esp. the gsl). They looked awesome brand new. Couldn't afford it, bought a jacked 67 Dodge Dart GT instead. Buddy had a blown Camaro. Fix it up! Keep em on the road. Body looks great still.

I had an '84 GSL with leather and sun/moon roof. Also had two roof choices. One that matched the paint and a glass one as well. I really miss that car because of how much fun it was to drive. And, as a total amateur drive, it was very forgiving. I kept it for over 10 years. When I sold it there were 134,000+ miles on it and it was still running fine. The only real issue I ever had was the need to replace the slave cylinder for the hydraulic clutch because of the seals drying out. BTW, the manual choke really was helpful with starts in any weather. All-in-all it was a joy to own and drive.

Nice review, but just a small tip for you: Rotary engines hate anything over 3k rpm when they're cold, so you might want to wait until it's warm before you rev it :)

My 85 had enough power to get me in all sorts of trouble and eventually into a tree head on....even after that accident ...I put it in reverse...(yes it was still running)...pulled the car off the tree and drove it home. The car was fixed and continued to live on and was still amazing....ran like a top....so reliable.

just a tip with premix is best to add the oil before you fill up it'll mix better with the fuel. and Vincent I've had and known people with turbo rotaries that were well over 130k and still running strong. good review though enjoy that car treat her well.

I bought my 83' FB not too long ago and from what the previous owner and mazda has told me everything is still original mechanically, the engine has never been rebuilt or replaced and the car is pretty beat to shit and yesterday it just rolled over 259,000 miles and so far the only problems i've had are old parts dying or breaking like the alternator that left me stranded in the canyons and occasionally catching on fire (yes it does that lol - First time SS clutch hose grounded and somehow burned the choke cable til it welded itself inside the sleeve so no more choke and also some wiring was damaged so no more gas cover button or trunk button, I just use a flathead to open the gas cover now and the second time it caught on fire the +battery terminal, touched a piece of metal and blew the terminal adapter to shit and what I think is funny is that both times I had to put the fires out with Mountain Dew lol), but at the end of the day I can't complain at all because I only paid $700 for it, it's sat for the last 5 years and only turned on to move. But as of now it's running pretty solid and in the last 11 days since the battery terminal fire i've driven it just over 1,000 miles without a single issue other than blowing about $100 in gas and a quart of premix and the fact that it struggles to keep up with minivans, but regardless it's my daily until I finish my RX8 and I love it

13B has 130hp? What about the fd rx7 producing "276hp" (which we all know is more than that). Also the "80k mile mark" is for turbo rotaries. NAs could do well over that no issue.

O... starting miles on "sweetie"(my '83 RX7) was 184,238miles. I enjoyed it. I gave it to the love of my life, her brother. ...he had/has same vehical... His is gray on gray(inside/outside).

I mean, swapping a 13b is a good idea I guess, but some porting and a decent exhaust and carb would have netted you more power.

No cup holder welcome to 1985..😄. 💯 hp is enough, cut ✂️ some pounds from the car. Dump the spare, replace the 💺 seats, wheels ... whatever. 200 pounds will feel like 30 hp. You wanna a cup holder get a girlfriend. 😆. OR a roll of duct tape in the floor board. A hack from the 80s. 👌

Cup holders...Really? That's your main complaint? You describe it as "very 80's". Well duh. It's a 1985 mazda, what did you think it was before you bought it. Allow me to educate your young millennial self: very few cars that I can think of had cup holders in the early 80's, it just wasn't a thing. I don't think you can really bash a car for not having a feature that most of its contemporaries didn't have either. I just wasted 3 minutes and 18 seconds I'll never get back. Thanks a lot.
