1985 MG Metro 6R4

This 6R4 was re-chipped and tuned to 450 BHP. I bought it for myself following my time as a volunteer rescue worker at the WTC on 9/11 where I helped rescue the last two survivors and recover the remains of others loved ones. I used it for a few years before selling it to Lane's Museum. I had developed quite a few medical issues from being at the WTC and needed the money to pay the bills NY refused to pay. Would have liked to keep her but circumstances wouldn't allow it. Nice to hear it run again. Maybe some day I'll visit it. Apparently they don't remember the full history of the car.

@Daniel Barton now im thinking its gonna have a few different things than what i originally thinking. i was going to do it with a na cbr1000rr engine which would make it fast but the transmission wouldnt work for more than 20,000 miles because of the load. not to mention cooling which i was planning on doing with the actual ducts and vents and a fat intercooler on the top like the real rs200. so i was thinking either a honda b16 or k20, whichever i come across first and naturally make it rwd since the output shafts will already be in the right direction. the only hunch i have with that is finding a way to reverse the transmission or attach a new one if necessary. that and both the downpipe and turbo with be squished right up against the cabin of the car + the intercooler which will be poking up above everything over roof so ill need some pretty intense heat shielding hence the need for functional ducts and vents, whilst not be a nightmare to work on. but theyre cheeper to turbo and upgrade and since the car will be mid engine, i wont have to struggle with driveshaft position considering the complicated suspension that actual rs200s have. upgrades for the car in general will be pretty cheep as well since the engine itself will be making way more power than the car will ever realistically need. the ecu's also will support actual car electronics like dash clusters and ac to without the need for a bunch of complicated electrical work. it wont have power steering and itll be pretty quick ratio so both cornering and some light drifting will be possible hopefully. itll have a full interior including bucket seats with harnesses and a respectively robust rollcage since itll be a rather small car and dangerous to wreck in. a quick release wheel will also be very practical in this situation if there were to be a fire. also want it to have gullwing doors like the dmc12s which will be kind of practical because of the rollcage and how tightly things will have to fit, but also to compliment the whole 80s theme. idk itll be a project but im really determined to make it happen.

@Daniel Barton i dont think im going to use a shell. itll resemble an rs200 but wont be exact. thats just the reference im going for. itll be more like a really high powered go cart than anything. just a frame made out of a chromoly steel of some sort. main thing im focused on is how that rear suspension is gonna co heed with the engine, wheelbase, and how im going to make the front subframe fit underneath trunk. but i wasnt really all too interested in cars as a kid, me and my brother would watch a ton rally stuff on youtube growing up. but my father worked on snowmobiles which is where my inspiration comes from in terms of sound. i get my inspiration from Liam Dorans rs200. minus the f1 wing and it being slammed, that car looks incredible and sounds kind of like a snowmobile 2stroke. but that metro project sounds awesome. anything 6R4 related is probably pretty expensive or hard to find considering its a classic car. but good luck, that sounds like it'll be a blast to drive to. hope you're able to find the stuff for it. those sound soo good to.

I remember the late great Tony Pond and Rob Arthur test driving the 6R4 ...B196 XUD in the Shell Donegal International Rally in 1985. It was an absolute jaw dropping animal of a car. The engine blew up due to a stuck throttle. It was embarrassingly fast for the other competitors!

You're selling them short, James. The 6R4 is one of our most popular cars among American visitors. We had FIA World Rally on cable TV back in the 80's, along with DTM, Porsche Supercup, etc. So Group B isn't completely foreign to us. Plus, we have visitors from all over the world. You should visit sometime and check out the visitors' map. Don't forget to do the basement tour too.

My first car was a metro, a 1.1s, had red seat belts! Loved that car but the first mot I had on it it failed on rust! The fucker was only ten years old but I'm sure English cars used to be made out of recycled crisp packets they were rust buckets, I haven't seen a metro in years!

This video is from an annual event we do at the museum. We highlight several cars, talk about their history, then run them. Each car is prepared for the event and run to operating temperature before the museum doors open in the morning. So the engines aren't revved cold. On the "pimp my ride shit done to the inside", do you mean the yellow windows? You'll have to ask Williams about that. This particular 6R4 was one of the last six, built after Group B was canceled, so it was converted by Williams for street use. The interior of the car is pure rally, not "pimp". Most car museums leave their cars roped off and never run them. We get ours out and drive them, including track time. Most of the museum staff are experienced racing drivers, so we do indeed know what we're doing. But maybe there's something you've learned about 6R4s from playing video games that we haven't learned from collecting, restoring, and driving them?
