My second car was a 1984 Buick Skyhawk with 2.0L OHV engine and 4 speed manual transmission. It was maybe 86 HP but the car was light and quick compared to other cars at the time. The turbo time could have been better but they were horrible for turbo lag followed by neck snapping acceleration. It also didn’t have an intercooler. The torque steer tried to yank the steering wheel away from the driver. The good thing was once up to top gear it could easily accelerate for passing at highway speeds, something the non-turbo cars could barely do. While 10 seconds seems slow, performance cars were around 7 to 8 seconds for 0-60 in those years so an economy class compact at that rate was pretty good.

The J car Sunbird had Improved by 85. The Turbo engine made it fairly quick and fun . It looked good as well. If you changed the oil every 3k miles you might squeeze 75k miles out of the original Turbo and motor but some had issues with rods, bearings etc. BUT , compared to many other cheapish turbo 4s at the time they weren't that bad overall. Younger owners often drove them hard and neglected the "2-3 minute cool down time" that turbos required before shutting the engine down after spirited driving. The Sunbird GTs were actually cool little cars then and now.

Watching MotorWeek brings back good memories but watching them now I keep being reminded that they were way too complimentary of the vehicles they tested, too quick to make excuses for their shortcomings and too impressed by the features and performance of the vehicles. Granted this was the 80s but they made no reference to the fact that the cars were good or bad by comparison to the industry standard at the time. Also, they were inconsistent in what they considered powerful or deemed high performance in several categories. Add to that the concern for evaluating the turning radius or passing speed was hard to comprehend. All in all, I watch it for nostalgia's sake.

It's too bad that now a days something like this cost upwards of $35,000. I wish we could get cars like this again. It's fun, it's pretty, and was fairly low cost in its day. Though this car is gray inside, back then we could still get interiors in colors. Now we have, black, gray and if you pay more beige mixed with black. As well, the nice velour upholstery in this Sun Bird is no more. Upholstery materials now, leather, faux leather, and fabrics something like the tongue of running shoes. YUK! I wonder, have we lost that much "Art" in our culture that ugly is now acceptable? How sad.
@RoadCone4114 жыл бұрын
discerningmind I don’t mean to be rude, but NO. J-cars were uncompetitive and poorly made, with trashy plastic interiors and terrible attention to detail. American cars were always at the bottom of the reliability surveys, and a “high-performance” turbo engine made in Brazil probably wasn’t going to make people jealous of its durability. This car was a niche model but it wasn’t great. John is talking about 150hp like it was really something - maybe it was in an American-made economy car in 1985 - but it was typical GM in that it was mated to the wrong transmission choices. I happen to have a soft spot for cars from the 1980s as I grew up with them, but J-cars didn’t age well. Not the worst cars from the decade but there were certainly better cars available both domestic and import. GM vehicles today may not sell in volume like they did in the 1980s, and there may still be one or two turds in the lineup, but they are much better and more competitive.

Lots of hate for these on here. I'm not saying they were the best ever, but it was the 80's, and these were NOT top end. 1: 150 horses in 1985 was pretty good. My 88 Olds with a 3.8 only made 165ish, and THAT was cinsidered "generous" at the time for an NA V6. They were still trying to work with the fuel economy and emissions standards, and hadn't come up with the technology to squeeze more out of engines while meeting the requirements yet. 2. 0-60 in 10 seconds, again, for that time and a car in that segment in the 80's isn't that bad. 3. There were WORSE cars than this. Slower, more cheaply made (though these weren't great in many ways), and far uglier. Think Chevy Citation/Phoenix, Chevette/600, Sprint. All worse than the better-by-comparison J-bodies. So, not the best, but for the time, middle of the road, affordable throw away cars.

I have to say, yes. For reliability and longevity, at least. Horsepower? Not that much different at the time (still had to have the US mandated emissions goodies). But the Japanese imports of the 80's? Yeah, way better made than the middle class American cars of the time. The big three should have been taking notes.
@GyroPyro1212126 жыл бұрын
MysteryWolph What a lot of people don’t realize is that Motorweek acceleration figures tend to be a few tenths behind the competition. They don’t shift their test vehicles particularly fast, perhaps so not to cause undue wear on them before returning them to the manufacturers/owners. That said, one could reasonably expect high 8 to low 9 second 0-60 mph times from a car such as this. 1/4 mile times in the low 16 second range would not be unreasonable for a seasoned driver who is not concerned with saving some wear and tear.

1:50 "Wildly impressed about everything", about a Cavalier that's for the birds? Has MotorWeek ever met a car that they didn't like? :)

Thank god on the slalom course the window was down. The driver would have smashed it with his huge head he seemed to think he needed to use to help bring the car around the cones.

Well, sports fans................this was the mid-eighties. Nice to see you can find in an affordable convertible with a back seat in 2019. The Mustang, Camaro, last of the Beetle, and Mini are available with a drop top, rear seat (of sorts) and affordable in 2019. Biggest problem with J cars was built quality, cheap suspension, body rust and engines prone to early failure.................gee, what else could go wrong? These J cars of any sort are mighty rare in 2019. No great loss, but always a shock to see one on the road or at a car show. MotorWeek brings us the joy at laughing at what was. The Sunbird continued to evolve (and improve some) up through the 1994 model, and then became the Sunfire in 1995. Ugh. Thanks for the fun, MotorWeek.

It's an Opel Ascona. Is that an attempt to bring European car to U.S.?

I wish Chevrolet would bring back the Cavaliers and or sun fires under Chevy and give it a small quick turbo 4cyl and keep the car basic and cheap. They were cool fun decent looking good on gas and very affordable for all ages and all incomes

They should of developed their turbo engines more for the 90s
