OK, I raced the 350s and the 500s back on the day and I have noticed a trend in young dudes riding both today, either restored or like the one in his video. Are you guys aware that those engines rev happily to redline, and you are shifting just before that magical powerband hits optimal and you hit warp speed? They're not that fragile. Is it an awareness thing, or does the unorthodox acceleration frighten you?

As a 25yr owner of a RZV500R, I totally agree! That engine is gonna run like crap if it's constantly being ridden outside the power-band. It needs to regularly 'clear it's throat' and should be ridden above 6500k.

You can find a decent condition NSR250 here for $5k or so, RS250 Aprilia maybe $9-12k. Not a 500 but honestly 99% of youtubers would kill themselves before the powerband fell off in first gear.

Looks great would love to see it stripped and some film on the build as it went. I would love to take a small new sportbike and put in a 250 single 2 stroke. As the larger multi cylinder engines are not as easy to find. Light small city racer, I am small a 250 single in modern chassis with weight in 270 range would be fine street screamer.

@@DelanoMoll This bike has aftermarket pipes with larger expansion Chambers , the oem parts are smaller and unlike these they're covered by bodywork and some heatshields. This will be hot around the seat area, no question about it.

They could cover it thought with the ehat shield underneath w/o affecting the looks I would say I have one of these but it has original bodywork. I am waiting for a pick-up coil to finish the project

@@DelanoMoll Idd, i would use headerwrap and a tail section more suited for the purpose like a YZR500. Good luck with the project, i came within inches of buying a red/black 86 RD500 as my second "Big" bike, my first was a RD350LC. There was a mixup at the shop so another clerk had booked it for his customer just before mine did so it was gone when i came to collect. That still hurts lol.

It's not in an R6 chassis. It in the original frame with an R6 swingarm, forks and R6 bodywork. Look how spindly the frame is in the side shots. There are R6 frames with 2 stroke motors fitted but this isn't one of them.

@@garywaterson3147 while I haven’t had a chance to experience a RZV personally, everything I’ve read (and a few folks I’ve talked with who have ridden the RZV) that talks about the alloy frame said it was appreciably better handling than the steel frame RZ/RD, as well as being usefully lighter... I THINK (not sure, can’t remember) that it was only produced for the Japanese market (with a restricted, or de-tuned engine), but quite a few (like the one in this video) made their way overseas, and regularly were tuned to a reliable 90 H.P. The one time I got to ride a RD 500 was in the rain, on tires that were well past their sell-by date. Scared the piss out of me when it hit its powerband! Damn, I miss two-strokes- both in G.P., and the open-class MX bikes. I still have the RZ 350 I bought new in 1985, and a ‘96 Aprilia 250... Didn’t Mick Doohan race an RD 500 in Australian production racing before he went to G.P.?

I never had the wobbles . Fitted tyre size and accurate wheel alignment was the key. As to the history, quite correct. I added to the hp. An Aussie A-grader rode and raced the first. Graeme Morris, an acquaintance. I raced RD/RZ 250 350 in prod events tho not at A grade. Our 20c coin was very useful as a fork shim for preloaded, together with dry ice

A properly tuned two stroke 500 can keep up with a 1000cc four stroke. So it's far from a shitty engine. If you have an R6 frame and an rd/rz500 engine laying around , it would make sense. But in this case everything apart from the front forks, wheels , fairings and swing arm is stock rd500.
