Attendance at Santa Anita that day was 85,527, all-time record for a single day that still stands and culmination of 15 years of promotion for the Big 'Cap.

Lord at War. One of the greatest sires in North America for the past 25 years. His daughters have thrown a Derby, Preakness winner, his grandson sired a Triple Crown winner in American Pharoah. His horses run on turf and dirt. A legendary horse who left us too soon via a freak accident at the barn. My favorite horse of All Time. His grandfather was one of the greatest milers in British racing history.

I'm an ardent fan of his grandsire Brigadier Gerard, and seeing Lord At War do so well as a racehorse and particularly as a sire, was heaven sent to me. A tragic loss, being so young, imagine what he could have accomplished at stud had he lived longer, and received the better quality mares he undoubtedly would have been sent.

Over 85,000 in attendance. At the time, the largest US racing crowd for a day, other than the Kentucky Derby. How things have changed.

Somebody should find the race where Trevor said: "The more Bill Shoemaker is asking Lord at War, the more The Lord is giving him!!" That, too, was a classic call. (and to Buck Last), I was there for the Greinton win, but I don't know that I ever heard/remember the CALL of the race. (wondering...)
