Keith Jackson was a freaking beast and was instrumental in 2 victories over Nebraska during his time at OU. He is probably the greatest TE in OU history. Just think what he could have done with QB’s that could have actually passed the ball. He would be a superstar in today’s OU offense. OU should not have won this game. We were stuffed all day by a great NU defense. A lot of it was Jackson’s heroics, and a great defensive effort. I think Switzer was 12-4 vs Tom Osborne. Great rivalry that swung back and forth through the years. Once Nebraska left the Big12, they seemed to lose an edge in recruiting. It really set their program back. OU has owned the conference, and has consistently been a top 4-5 program for 20 yrs. I think if NU would’ve stayed in the Big 12, they would still be up there too.

I would argue some of his success was that pass was made when no one expected it. OU would be pounding out of the wishbone and Jackson would just slip behind the D. Man, remember this game....what a heart breaker. So much shoulda coulda woulda. These were some hard hittin games man.

there are three games that stand out in this series for their kill or be killed mentality! now, this is just my opinion! the 78 game the blackshirts were bringing it that game. this game in 86 was a brawl on the field from start to finish and the 87 game was the same way, it was a fight from start to finish! there are few that measure up to these three games. i have to add as an ou fan the black shirts of today are not the black shirts of yesterday! even switzer admits that! these nebraska black shirts would flat out knock your head off! same on ou's side.

I read somewhere that in Osborne's offense, the give to the fullback on an option play was never a "read" though it was designed, practiced and executed to look like it. He wasn't comfortable with the risk, so anytime the fullback got the ball it was a called play and not the QB reading a defender and making a decision to give or pull.
@traviszahl1081 Жыл бұрын
Mostly traps and belly. Guessing the times it wasn’t blocked that way they were running the veer with an automatic give call once they saw what defense ends were doing. Very good point though. I don’t think Nebraska ran the triple option even though it looked like it

Great times for both programs. Nebraska outplayed OU for 3 quarters. Keith Jackson killed Nebraska in 85 & 86. He was the difference in both games & also against Penn State in the Orange Bowl. O loved Nebraskas offense though. Dana Brinson should have been more in the game plan for Nebraska. Definitely the fastest player on the field. The hit between David Vickers & Keith Jones was one of the most vicious collisions in the game. Special times & memories for alot families in the mid & late 80’s.

I always enjoyed the Nebraska-Oklahoma games back in the 80's because I knew one of them was going to lose. Check out Jamelle Holieway's QB stats for the whole year at 2:20.
@miltonsmith974 Жыл бұрын
LOL! Holieway was recruited to run the wishbone (which he did with amazing aplomb) not to light up the air passing the ball. That's why he only average throwing the ball a little over 4 times a game! Back then, the wishbone was one of the most difficult offenses in college football to stop - especially if it was run by a QB magician like Holieway. 😊

This game, probably more than any other, exemplifies why Osborne can never be considered great. Remember, when it mattered, most of the time, Osborn didn't. Less than 4 minutes to go, leading OU 17-10, Osborne: *** cant stop OU, and OU drives 94 yds for a score, and then *** can't get a 1st down that would have ensured at least a tie, and then *** can't stop OU, and OU drives another 55 yds to kick the game winner. Has to be the worst 4 mins (out of 3060) of Osborne's battles with Switzer. Switzer let Osborne believe that Neb was really in the game. What a joke of a coach, Osborne was.
@mattloge45394 жыл бұрын
Rob I don't think you're thinking rationally here. LoL. I mean Tom Osborn only coached one of the winning-est stretches of all time.
@robjohnson88614 жыл бұрын
@@mattloge4539 Visit other Neb threads where I shred the 60-3 run. One of example (of many, many), regards the 95 team. 4 Big 8 teams finished ranked in the top 10 that year, right. I took the 4 best teams from 71, 3 ranked, Iowa St, unranked, but good and compared their SOS to the 4 95 teams The results. The avg SOS for 95 was 33.5 The avg SOS for 71 was 9.5 (3, 7, 12, 16)/4 Neb 95 was considered the best ever after 95. Very few mentioned Neb 71 but as time went on we begin to understand more about how bad that teams competition and coaches were (over their career) and now Neb 95 is currently #4 and will be #5 when LSU 2019 is factored in. You'll be amazed at how overrated Osborne when you look at the stats that I calculated from hunches I had, that proved over and over to be spot on.

Alan Sawatzky The Big 8 needs to get brought back. The rivalry was THE game of the year even though Michigan-Ohio State and Miami-FSU were also great games but Nebraska-Oklahoma was bigger than both of them and that’s saying something.
