Everybody had forgotten by that point that these "Full-size" cars in '86 were the size of the mid-size cars of 1971-76...
@michaelhungate75063 жыл бұрын
The 71/76 models were the longest widest and heaviest GM ever made. The 77-90 Caprices were 600-800 pounds lighter than the 71-76 models.

I like how the then aging Caprice was repositioned as a classic full size luxury car. Back when this downsized version came out in 1977, it was all about "now that's more like it" as a sensible, smaller everyday mainstream sedan for the masses.

My second brand new car ever was a very sweet, nicely equipped '81 Caprice. Part of the reason I have such fond memories of it was that I took the advice from a friend of mine who worked for a big Chevy dealer and specified a gas V-8, thereby avoiding the problematic standard V-6 (rough idle and transmission complaints) and the 350 diesel fiasco. I owned it for only a couple of years so maybe that wasn't long enough to have problems with it, but that Caprice is still one of my favorites out of the 40-ish vehicles I've owned so far.

Very nice car. The Caprice Landau coupe with the Biarritz-style moldings, the 88-89 LS Brougham sedan and the 85-86 Pontiac Parisienne version were my favorite body styles.
@moonbeamskies33466 жыл бұрын
So true. So many cars were going to front wheel drive, V6 or 4 cylinder engines, and smaller dimensions in this era. We were being trained to see cars like Taurus and Celebrity as standard.
@Drchainsaw775 жыл бұрын
The Celebrity was, in essence, a trimmed Caprice -- would have been a much better car with a 3.8L and rear-drive. I hate front-drive.

This was the year (1986) that Chevrolet made the mistake of removing the hood ornament. It was back the following year. An 80s Caprice without a hood ornament is like a woman with no curves. You can drive it, but it's not much fun to look at.
