I was a supervisor at a Hardee's (early 90s) when they changed to making things to order rather than pre-cooking. It only took a few months to to from big money to no money. I still like to hit up a Hardee's when I can find one while traveling, but they are way too slow in a world where people get 30 minutes or less for lunch.
@2K-Tan7 жыл бұрын
TheRedBanner I work at one now and constantly deal with customers that aren't aware we aren't "true fast food" and dont know their food is getting made to order. It doesn't help we run a skeleton crew and I'm frontline so the customers waiting for their food are mad at me because their is one guy in the back having to make it all 😂 Hardees these days does no business because like you said it's too slow to be fast food and pretty pricey too. So people that want that just go to an actual dine in restaurant.

This is 11 years later, so you might not see it, but maybe someone else who worked fast food back in the day will. I worked at McDonald's for several years in the late 2000s; did you guys just not have many special orders back then? I think back and a huge chunk of our orders were special orders, even if it was just to add/remove one item. We would have either had to throw away so much food (or just serve it past its best buy time) if we pre-cooked now. Every time I watch these videos I always wonder if people special ordered less back then, or if this was just something you had to deal with.
@TheRedBanner Жыл бұрын
@@holidayhawk1991restaurants figure out what the most likely order will be, and that is the standard item. During peak times we would have some of each premade, sitting in the chutes. I don't doubt that over time people have gotten more used to customizing their orders. The difference though back then in the case I mentioned is that we went from having dozens of cooked hamburger or chicken patties in warming trays ready to be assembled to waiting for the customers to order them before beginning to cook them. It went from taking less than a minute to assemble a sandwich to more than 5 minutes. That's a lot in fast food. I worked for franchisees that had 5 locations, and all of them were shut down in about a year. They were all in locations that served people on a limited schedule. Mine was near the high school, college, and one of the largest factories. The people who were packing our lines did not have time to wait for every order to be made start to finish. Wasn't long before we were spending the lunch hour watching the Wendy's, McDonald's, Taco Bell, and Burger King that surrounded us serving all the customers.

Sometimes a customer might ask to warm a baby bottle? I have more of a chance of winning the Powerball jackpot, twice, than that happening. I worked in a fast food restaurant (Taco Bell, company owned) for 1 1/2 years, and nobody was ever asked that. That 45 second goal for serving the customer was 30 seconds at T.B. An absolute impossibility, unless you want to serve crap to the customer. Even though it was impossible, upper management (above store managers) used that as a reason to get rid of managers, assistant managers, leads, etc., they didn't want anymore. Just an excuse to fire people, not as some sort of customer service goal.
