This was my first car (got it in 2006), exact color scheme and everything. Loved driving it and didn't care what people said about the diesel sound/smell. Lasted till 120k and could have went another 100 if it hadn't been rear-ended while parked outside my house. My Accord is a great car, but this Merc was a tank.

I had an `88 (bought w/ 126,000 miles; sold w/ 179,000 miles) for about 6 years. I was the 2nd owner. When I turned the key, it started right up in under 1 second. Sounds like that car may have issues! Still, it has GORGEOUS interior and once she turns over, sounds tip-top to me! I'm driving a 1985 300D Turbo Diesel now and I absolutely love it! But I sure do miss the power seats, power headrests, airbag, ABS, and power telescoping wheel of the SDL.

Yeah when I was 12 years old my mom took me to her friends house who just bought this one and the larger model. He decided to take us to the LA county fair in this one (brand new) and when he started it up I thought it sounded horrible but then when we sat inside and he closed the doors you couldn't hear anything except a strong purrr and then my eyes and my sense of smell was amazing! I was in heaven with the inside of this car. I am seriously looking to relive this again :)

I just picked up a 87 salad identical to that for $500. 1 owner car. Always garage kept. Flawless inside and out with 160k miles. Purchased new locally And religiously serviced by dealership. Probably $20k in service records. Still has window stickers and all owners manuals and books. Along with first aid kit and mercedes car cover. Probably the nicest mercedes daily driver i have ever seen.

I've owned 3 diesel Benz's; a 78 300 D, an 87 SD, and an 89 SDL. Considering maintenance, repairs and purchase price, they were the least expensive vehicles I've ever owned in all of my 73 years. Each one had at least 150,000 miles and 13 years when I bought it. I did the basic maintenance myself like oil changes and brakes. My last one had 408,000 miles when I sold it and the engine was still fine.The transmission went bad because I hadn't done the recommended maintenance. My bad, not the car's. With proper care, some have gone 1,000,000 miles! Because diesel fuel costs more than gas today, I think I'd like to have another and convert it to a grease car. Wonderful machines - they make everything else look cheap. Eg: I replaced the water pump and the OEM easily weighed 3X what the standard aftermarket pump did. I could go on all day. I just love these cars. However, my mechanic, certified by benz, said that the newer c class models are relatively junky, compared to the older S and D models. But they're still probably better than any Ford. And I'm a huge Ford truck fan. Gotta have me some E 150 for music gear! If you can turn a wrench and watch how-to videos, don't be afraid of maintenance costs. But never, ever, ever take it to a dealer, unless you hit the Megamillions jackpot. Find a certified Benz technician who works on the side. Funny story: I dated a girl who, after several months, complained, "You said you were rich!". "I said no such thing", I replied. She'd assumed I was wealthy because of the car. I was glad to be rid of that misdirected gold digger!

@zech007 The only OM603 that's really bad is the 89 mm bore x 92.4 mm stroke version used for the 350SD(L) from 1990-93. Apparently, the changes to both the bore and stroke (as opposed to the 1st-gen OM603's 87 mm bore x 84 mm stroke) meant that the engine got pushed beyond its reliable limits.

good observation Will. I would definitely start with the health of the glow plugs, next diesel supply and finally a compression test.
@kaarlepatomaki167510 жыл бұрын
Good guesses, but I would most definitely bet my money on fuel lines (leaking o-rings). As you can see, it kinda started right up, only after 6 cranks. If you have problems with glow plugs or bad compression, you will have a struggling start. Now this started completely without hesitation after pumping some fuel to the engine.

Hello guys, Anyone knows what to modify in order to drop the RPM in a '83 300sd from 3000 RPM at 70MPH to 2000RPM ,???? Thanks John
@blinkfan30510 жыл бұрын
Your car has a non-overdrive transmission, so the only way to drop RPM would be a different transmission entirely, or a lower rear end ratio. You're not going to drop 1000 RPM as is, and the aforementioned mods aren't likely to achieve this either.
@airhornwaggon10 жыл бұрын
you can find a 2.88 rear end out of an 85 300d/ cd/ td/ sd and install it. that would be the best route. would drop rpm's a couple hundred. if you find a rare w116 6.9 rear end (2.65) or some w126's had a 2.47, you'd be bogging down the engine. your om617 makes peak torque at 2800rpm and is pretty efficient there.

yeah. My dad's friend is a really good auto body guy. if you are going to get it re-clear coated, buy the stuff yourself, and spend the extra money. car companies and most body shops use stuff that's yellowish... it's revolting. so make sure you buy it and that it's clear in the can..

@Motorfordtoyota the new ones? Hell yes! The 80's and earlier? If properly maintained (and they rarely are, sadly) they'll last well over what most cars can do by 100,000's of miles, and easily too. So, it kind of goes both ways depending on what era they were built in :)
