Vanessa del Rio was born Ana María Sánchez and raised in Harlem, New York, the only child of immigrants from Cuba and Puerto Rico. Her mother would take her to see the Spanish language movies of Isabel Sarli, a passionate, voluptuous Argentinian actress with a charismatic power over men whom Vanessa credits as a big influence in her life.
She describes her mother as "an innocent, deeply religious woman who didn't really relate to Sarli's sexuality," while her young daughter focused on Sarli's power over men, and wanted that power for herself. After an early childhood as religious as her mother's, Sanchez dropped out of school in the 8th grade, tired of the sheltered life imposed on her at home. She studied coding, and became a computer programmer at age 18, then abandoned the straight life altogether to live in a series of stolen Volkswagen Beetles with a criminal boyfriend.
When that adventure ended two years later she became "a waitress, then a topless barmaid, and finally a go-go dancer" before accepting her first hardcore porn role in the film China Doll because "it paid $150, which was exactly my half of the rent," so she could join a boyfriend in Europe. In her illustrated biography from TASCHEN Publications (Vanessa del Rio: Fifty Years of Slightly Slutty Behavior, 2007) she revealed to editor Dian Hanson that she also worked as a streetwalker and call girl prior to entering adult films

I was much younger then, and if my memory serves me correctly I did actually have a very good-looking girlfriend, and my exposure to adult material was far more limited than it is today. VCRs were really brand spanking new at the time, and, thus, they were notably expensive, and I didn’t have one. In any event, the selection of available content was way less than it is today. And though I was absolutely enthralled with her grace, her beauty and her presence, she was, after all, an adult entertainer, and a no-holds barred one at that. On another note, Everybody blames all their issues on drugs but they're never totally open about why they turn to these mind altering substances in the first place. And in my recent personal discover I found that so many of us have unresolved childhood traumas that we may not even realize. I think the bigger problem is that we are all discouraged from confronting our parents and caretakers about their shortcomings. If you have enough money you get to talk to good therapists for help. Meanwhile most end up burying their trauma, which ultimately manifests itself in unhealthy ways and thought patterns that can follow a person throughout their entire life. This is typical in how people demonize drugs and alcohol in that 'the devil made me do it' fashion without taking responsibility for their own choices/actions in life. Yes. AIDS hit around 1980-1. Took out tens of thousands of people, including some I knew, and including porn star Lisa DeLeuw. It was a horrible way to go. @@vfry7896 Thanks for the feedback. Yes. I read about it in an article in, New York magazine, I believe it was. The author described a visit to an AIDS ward. It was in the basement of a local hospital. The description was positively frightening. The author said that, basically, these people were dumped there and left to die in misery and filth. According to the writer, the scene matched descriptions of 19th century hospitals, with people screaming and squirming in extreme pain, with many experiencing horrible hallucinations, since AIDS attacks both body and brain. I wasn’t close to any of those individuals. There was one of my girlfriend’s college professors, a guy from my church, a guy I worked with. And they all went quickly - none lasted more than about 8-10 weeks. I was extremely lucky not to get hemmed up like that - it was a wild time and I wasn’t necessarily exercising the wisest judgment in my affairs. Best. Thanks for your feedback. Peace!
