Sweet rig, When my son was born in 1999 I had a 84 FJ60,bought it out of an Orange grove near Orlando, for $1400 desmogged the carb (ran and started so much easier after desmog), put an Old Man Emu lift and ran 9.50 33 15 swampers. My kid would never sleep so id throw him in the Landcruiser and drive down A1a the hum of the tires always put him to sleep. That rig made 2.5 trips to Alaska from Cocoa Beach finally rusted away so we cut the roof off took all the doors off it welded in a roll cage and I ran it like that till the wind screen fell out. At that time it had 330xxx miles All I ever did to it was replace brakes, OEM springs and shocks and an alternator and ignitor. Just last year I found an 88FJ62 that hadnt run since 1998 its running now its an Auto with power windows (Yuck) my GF loves it but its dog slow compared to the FJ60 she drives it often great rigs super durable.

real cool video!! Although as somebody who daily drives an fj60, your comment on 18mpg highway made me howl. the most I have EVER gotten in mpg ANYWHERE was 13. That was driving under 2k rpm's at 55 mph. Gas HOG. love it to death though, driving it from STL to Alaska this summer.
@masonbarnyard Жыл бұрын
I agree, 18mpg on highway is unrealistic, however, I was able to get close to 18mpg highway once it was desmogged with a better exhaust. Removing the smog really makes them come alive.

Hi from Alaska, you probably drove through my little town on your way in, I saw a few this summer. My daily driver's an '88 FJ62, just broken in at 222K and running strong. No doubt you had a good time. Cheers to your epic trip! 👍

they are very nice rigs and getting better as time goes on (if they're looked after). I don't think they came with headlight washers or those fender vents but I'm probably wrong, mine didn't. edit: that lever to fold the back seat down is supposed to operate both latches simultaneously with a connecting rod inside the seat but the ends bugger up over time.

Beautiful & clean rig and done tastefully. 1986 should have a 5 speed H55 transmission. I have an 84 and its a 4 speed which was last year for 4 speed manuals. Make sure that galley oil plug was done
@cnuila Жыл бұрын
I believe the factory 5-speed was never offered in the US on the FJ60 (other global markets had many other variations of engine/transmission). I have a 1985 FJ60 and it is a factory 4-speed manual. Even when the updated FJ62 arrived in 1988 it was only offered here with the 3FE fuel injected engine and automatic transmission.
@edwinthomas618 Жыл бұрын
@@cnuila 5 speed were offered in US between 85 to 87
@cnuila Жыл бұрын
@@edwinthomas618 I don’t mean to be a keyboard warrior, and if you can find me any example of an FJ60 delivered in the United States with a 5-speed from the factory I’ll happily concede, but it’s pretty well documented that they only came with 4-speeds all the way to 1987. The H55 5-speed swap is very common though, as it can usually just bolt right up to the engine and transfer case, especially in the 85-87s.
@edwinthomas618 Жыл бұрын
@@cnuila Well I be damn...i learned something new every day. I could have sworn I read on Ih8mud that 85-87 US models came with 5 speeds. I stand corrected. thanks

I had one, an 1986 model it was an automatic - very slow, handled like a boat, the drum brakes also were not the best - I think a manual might have been better. Sucked juice. Good on the open road, terrible around town or up hills. I now have a 1986 Isuzu trooper (in Australia called a Jackaroo) - it handles much better, a lighter car, probably not as tough off-road, but tough enough for most off-roading, I think the Isuzu looks better - seems to get 100 klms for 12 litres.

It is not completelely simple. Have you ween the emmisions crap strapped to that poor engine. Converting one to fuel injection and already put in a 5-speed over drive. No more choke, cold start issues and comfortable freeway cruising. Perfect!!! I wish it were mines.
