I was at a party and this game was playing in the background on a TV over the bar. By the 10th inning the party stopped and everyone, even the Yankees fans lol were cheering on the Mets. I still get choked up watching this many years later. One of the true great moments in sports and a reminder to never give up.

Why would Yankee fans cheer on the red sox who have always been their biggest rival? Yankee fans don't really hate Mets fans.

2 outs in the 10th inning down by 2 runs in an elimination WS game. Mets winning percentage was probably 1% yet they came back and won it. Amazing.

Lifelong Phillies fan here but this was one of my earliest spots memories. Amazing game and series! I really enjoyed the "Once Upon a Time in Queen" 30-for-30 documentary as well. One thing I was a little annoyed by that the glossed over however was the rainout on what should have been the next day's game seven. This allowed McNamara to start Bruce Hurst on only three-days rest instead of going with Oil Can Boyd who would've normally been the scheduled hurler. Facinating to think what would have transpired had Game 7 gone off as regularly scheduled the following evening. Two possible scenarios that come to mind... 1) The Mets carry their momentum over from the previous night and bury Boston in a game that's never in doubt. 2) The enigmatic Oil Can pitches the game of his life - instead of a tiring-by-the-sixth-inning Bruce Hurst - and the Sox win the game + series.
@94champs Жыл бұрын
After Game 6 it was over no matter who pitched for the Red Sox. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead and Hurst was dealing, yet they still lost. Don't see a much better scenario than that if Oil Can pitches, and I doubt he pitches the game of his life. In fact I believe McNamara scolded him before Game 7 because he went to a crackhouse somewhere in NYC.

It's amazing how many more views Game 7 has. People really sleep on Game 6, arguably the best Game 6 ever right there with CIN vs. BOS from the 1975 WS. This was the first WS for me as a kid and most dramatic game I've ever watched to this day.

The killer in that inning was really Stanley’s WP that allowed the tying run to score. But I remember watching this game at a party and telling the folks there “Why is Bill Buckner still at first base? Where is Dave Stapleton?” Buckner was on his last legs that year and McNamara would routinely bring in Stapleton as a defensive replacement for him in close games in the 9th inning. Inexplicably, he did not do so this time. Some say McNamara wanted Buckner, who was beloved and respected by all, to be on the field as the Red Sox celebrated their championship. But no one will ever know. All I know is saying he should have been replaced…win first, then celebrate. No one on that Boston team, to their credit, ever blamed either Buckner or McNamara, and the Boston fans eventually forgave Buckner (now that they’ve won a few World Series, it’s probably easier, of course).

The mid-late 80s NY Mets were very high profile. And to a certain extent, the more glamorous of the two NY baseball teams at that time. That had to rub many Yankees fans (and George Steinbrenner?) the wrong way on so many levels. The NY Yankees WERE New York for so many years. And then to have this young, very talented, and brash team from Queens NY grabbing all the headlines? I can understand why Yankees fans were rooting for the Red Sox to beat them.

Mets just got there 7 game winning streak snapped and the Red Sox have a 6 game streak going. So New York has passed the baton to Boston. Maybe we will get Mets vs Red Sox World Series. That would be better than a boring Yankees vs Phillies one.

Came here prompted by a distant American relative. Jeepers, more jargon than a chemist's convention. I thought cricket was fully stocked with its own terminology, but baseball takes the biscuit. Base hit, a bit of English on it, fly ball, double play; I think I'll go back to Charlie Brown. 2 weird things immediately occur to me; the Red Sox wear white socks, and instead of cheering the crowd goes quiet when someone takes a catch. No disrepect intended; I come from a place of ignorance. These are just ignorant observations. Congrats on your xcomeback, Mets.

Even if he gets the ball, Mookie could’ve feasibly beaten Buckner to first base given how fast he was. Ray Knight wouldn’t have scored, though, so it would’ve gone to another at-bat. Either way, the Mets had a good chance of winning regardless of what happened on that play.
