i do think these are badass, but the reason the big v8 muscle is so popular even to this day. is that its more reliable, simpler, easier to work on, more receptive to modifications etc. even when you bought a 440 6 pack from dodge back in the day, you could still buy mopar performance parts
@brianlarose61102 жыл бұрын
You are correct until you get to "more receptive to modifications". The cars that are the most receptive to mods are almost always factory trubocharged. On these Turbo Regals, a new turbo, downpipe, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, adjustable wastegate, and water/alcohol injection to control knock gets you into something stupid fast for a few grand. Hard to do that with a NA motor.
@arthurkurtzhall53693 жыл бұрын
That is a Grand National not the GNX therefore it does not have 276 hp as the GNX's were not available with T Tops. The GNX's also came with fender flares and heat extractors built into the fenders and a more traditinally designed instrument cluster.

I noticed he’s got the GNX specs. The power for 87’s was 245hp/355lb ft. But with the parts I’m seeing there it’s probably making at least double the power. Nice review! Subscribed!

This is a Turbo T Regal not a Grand National or a Grand National Experimental This has GNX style wheels but nobody ever claimed it was a GNX other than suggested HP. All of the turbo Buicks were kickass! No matter it was a Turbo T, a T-Type, a Grand National or the Holy Grail GNX! If you own a turbo Regal you own a legendary build!

The stock 87 GN only made 245 hp/340 lbs.-ft torque. 6:30 those are not the stock wheels either. 8:14 This car died because GM change the Regal to fwd in 88. The SHO never beat a Mustang GT.

Yup. Nice review but as a GN owner, I am tired of hearing that "GM killed the Grand National because it outran the Corvette". Cute story, but GM killed the Grand National because they switched their entire sedan line up to unibody/front drive. They literally closed the G-Body (Regal, Cutless, Monte Carlo, Grand Prix among others) plant, not retooled it. Rear drive full frame mid sized cars were done. That's why the GN died, that reason alone.

@brianlarose61102 жыл бұрын
@@xdavstratx Yup, shifting gears manually would mean lifting the throttle, which would close the throttle plates and open the waste gate which dumps all the boost. It took these old cars with big turbos a while to spool up, once they did you want to stay in the boost, not build/stop/rebuild it.
@GrandCamino62 жыл бұрын
Everyone says that. I used to think that too but these engines don’t really like to be rev’d too high which is the fun part plus as someone else mentioned building boost and then loosing it all and having to build boost again in between shifts. Doesn’t look or sound like fun. The 3.42 final drive ration with the 2.74 1st gear is a perfect match for street drivability in stock or lightly modded form. There’s a guy who did swap in a T56 6spd manual in his Grand National. It looks pretty cool but it does appear to be a bit slower as a fair amount of time passes in between shifts vs being in full boost accelerating the whole time with the OEM auto. Here’s a direct link if you want to see that or search “Buick Grand National T56 swap first drive” kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqSwiouAl9ylqdk

It's a shame it had absolutely NO top end speed. A 4-banger Dodge Daytona Z would run 13 mph faster on the top end. When you cant hit a 125mph top speed, it's not really that fast. The Mustang, Trans Am, IROC & Turbo Thunderbird could all run 20 mph or more fast than the GN on the big end.
@jdgreen2143 жыл бұрын
A chip changes all of that plus drag races are measured by the quater mile in which this car shines. It a muscle car which means straight forward acceleration.
@thomastimmermann98953 жыл бұрын
The GN was not top end limited due to hp, it had that over all rivals. GM limited the car to 128 mph via the computer pulling fuel back. The reason was liability as it was sold with S rated tires, not higher speed V rated tires
@ct87gn253 жыл бұрын
@@thomastimmermann9895 Exactly correct. The Goodyear Eagle GT's were the limiting factor for the 124MPH top speed. Didn't matter though, because by time it hit the limiter, it was already bus lengths ahead of it's 'compitition' of the time, LOL.....
