1987 Buick Grand National Test Drive | Bring a Trailer

This 1987 Buick Grand National is powered by a turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission and finished in black over a black and grey cloth interior. The car was recently acquired by the seller following 14 years of storage with its previous owner, a friend who reportedly purchased it new.
All Grand Nationals were finished in black with matching trim, and this example features tinted windows, an air dam, and a rear spoiler as well as new bumper fillers.
Black cloth seats feature grey inserts, and the 3-spoke steering wheel is trimmed in gray leather. A stock cassette player is retained in the center stack, while AutoMeter gauges measuring oil pressure and water temperature are mounted on the console below.
The turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The October 2018 work included new oil for the engine, transmission, and positraction differential as well as replacement of associated gaskets.

I bought a brand new 1987 Grand National in the spring of 1988. A very lovely looking automobile. Great performance as long as you pulled into my GM dealer for service every week. Think about this in 87 and 88 dollars.... $6000.00 in warranty and paintwork in 3 years. It was a heartbreaker. The locking diff was a nightmare as it wasn't a posi ! Always 2 hands on the wheel. Only thing I can remember was blowing by a Porsche 933 like it was standing still on a long grade near Temagami Ontario.We parted that year.. the car wound up in Australia...good place for it. A total nightmare. Haven't owned a GM since.

A friend of mine had one in the early 90's. He put money into it, until it was "fast enough to eject tapes" (whatever was in the deck would spit out when he floored it). He got rid of it when he couldn't afford the insurance. A bachelor steel worker making a killing in 1993 couldn't afford a Grand National. My bone stock 2016 V6 Accord can smoke it, if it's a hot air car. The intercooled '87s, it's a dead heat on paper. Technology has democratized speed, some of the faggiest modern cars on the planet can shit all over a GN, but they can't carry six figures like one. The GN is a victim of its own legend.
