1987 Cobra Sea Ray with Sea Slug G.I. Joe review

A review of the Cobra attack submarine Sea Ray and it's pilot, Sea Slug. The vehicle is notable for two things: its ability to split into a mini-sub and glider, and its odd use of a Macross Valkyrie VF-1 robot chest part in the mold. First released in 1987 and re-released in 1988 by Hasbro, it was available for mail-order in 1991 - but without the figure, which was never available outside the original retail releases. Special thanks to vf1skull1 for reminding me that the Sea Ray does appear in some media: the 1990 NES GI Joe video game!

I grew up in a town not far from Hasbro. As kids we used to get to go to one of their testing sites (best way I can describe it) in my town. We’d go into a room get a gijoe vehicle (new in the box) and put it together while someone watched. Then we could keep it. I remember getting this vehicle like that. It was so great.

You know, I'm not a G.I. Joe collector or anything, but I still watch all of your videos. As a guy with a vintage toy collection I find them very informative and I appreciate the thoroughness of each review.

I ordered at least two Sea Rays off of eBay and three Sea Slugs. I am having fun with both Sea Rays.

Using a Macross Valkyrie chest piece sort of makes sense, as Hasbro had licensed the mold a couple years earlier for use in Transformers. Using little bit pieces for other things would have been a cost saving measure, if that is indeed what occurred.

if i remember right it does appear in the GI JOE nes game as an end level boss

YES! I forgot about that 1990 GI Joe NES game. A few vehicles made their only appearances in it, like the Cobra Sea Ray and Buzz Boar.

Yep there were 2 games on the nes and an amazing 4 player arcade game.

now you're getting into my wheel house kevin, this was one of the last few years I collected gi joe as a kid, 87,88,89. I remember having sea slug, mamba, and the sky hawk with chrome covering, but the two pieces that I loved during this time was the hiss tank 2 and the crusader shuttle, do you have any plans to do a review of those two vehicles, they were awesome as a kid.

I don't have either the HISS II or the Crusader. Both are very interesting toys and I might get the HISS II in the future. If I can't acquire a Defiant space shuttle, the Crusader will be a good stand in.

I remember getting grounded because I managed to tie a trouble bubble a sea ray an a joe plane to our ceiling fan....when I turned it on parts of the ceiling an little bits if plastic started flying. I thought it was the greatest thing ever, mom did not.

Oh yes... lot's of JAMMING this one back together. Although, admittedly, my "engine" was the same color as the rest of the vehicle. I never knew about the diver and pilot on the "glider" though. I always just sat a figure in the glider, like a seat kind of. Also, I didn't know the Shark was "supposed" to have two guys on the bottom, I just thought I was getting away with something.

This was the last vehicle I had as a kid. I agree with the awkwardness in attaching/detaching the glider and sub. I also never liked the front guns didn't have the same detailing on them. I always wondered shy the Sea Slug never had any dive gear. Seems dangerous to pilot a sub without some. And for the dunk tank, it does say in the file card they sit low in the water to avoid detection. Edit: And no mention on how beefy the Sea Slug figure's arms are?

I don't mind the sub sitting low, I just wish it didn't wobble to one side or the other! After filming I took the sub apart to dry it and discovered that it has metal weights insides to balance it. Now that you mention the huge biceps... I can't stop seeing them. At least the arms can rest flat at his sides.
