IDI stands for “in-direct injection” not international. The Powerstroke introduced is 94.5 was direct injection and were also built and designed by Navistar/International for Ford. Same goes for the 6.0 and 6.4. The early 6.0 trucks were problematic from rushed development to meet emission standards and put strain on the partnership. The 6.4 was the straw that broke the camels back which is why they were only built for a couple of years. So Ford decided to design their own in house 6.7 Powerstroke while they sold the 6.4 stock off. And in 2010 cut ties with Navistar/International. 2011 onward to modern day is the 6.7 Powerstroke designed by Ford and has been a fantastic proven reliable and powerful design.

@@SPARTAN-mb6gx no one here is saying the opposite. What's commendable here is Ford was able to design an HD truck Diesel engine from scratch and achieve reliability levels on par with the old 7.3 Powerstroke while also no longer relying on a 3rd party to get their Diesels from.

Slow but reliable with a 5-speed manual, just as God intended. This is a truck meant to do real work. To be fair, the 6.2L diesel in the GM trucks made less power and was intended for fuel economy. This truck is very clean for its age and looks so good. LMC Truck can take care of the worn upholstery and torn headliner. Ford's truck diesels were built by International through the 6.4 despite the PowerStroke branding. Ford didn't start making its own PowerStrokes until 2011's 6.7.

I drove a bunch of these Ford diesels in Tow Trucks. 1988 to 1997 7.3 Non Turbo, 7.3 IDI Turbo, and 7.3 Powerstroke. We also had a 460 gas truck that felt great empty, buy was a dog when loaded. The Diesels felt the same empty or loaded.

The 460 in it's late carbed and late efi era was extremely down on power due to emissions. It was great in the pre-emissions carb, and early efi era. More torque than an NA IDI and can even hand it to a psd

Wrong: IDI stands for indirect injection (the clatter not seen on todays trucks) The power stroke from 1994-2003 is a Navistar engine. Navistar is a spin off of International Harvester. Ford didn’t build their first in house diesel until the 6.7 came out for the 2011 model year. Let’s work on getting it right before we speak.

Love this! Gorgeous old girl! Huge kudos to the owner for leaving this beauty period correct! I swear the old IDI diesels are still the absolute best sounding diesel pickups of all time. Just sound mean, like they would chew a hole through the planet if given the chance. These are not fast, but they will pull ANYTHING. And is the only diesel in a pickup truck that can compare to the original 6BT Cummins in terms of longevity, durability, and are about as bulletproof as anything Grew up around these, all great memories See if you can find the quite rare factory turbo 7.3 IDI to review. We had one brand new in 1993 (I believe late 93 and early 94 was the only years you could get the turbo IDI 7.3) The turbo IDI was essentially a stop gap between the IDIs and the first Powerstroke (which little know wasn’t called the Powerstroke out of the gate, it was just called the Direct Injection 7.3 for the first few months of production before the term “Powerstroke” was coined) And it’s surprising as Ford intentionality choked the factory turbo IDI 7.3 so the direct injection Powerstroke seemed so much better. The downpipe was intentionally kept small and kinked, whereas the International branded turbo IDI 7.3 didnt have that issue. Without being choked the turbo 7.3 IDI actually made more torque down low than the first few years of the Powerstroke made. I can go on and on even more but I’m sure this comment is far too long already lol If anyone wants to know more just let me know. Take care, and enjoy that IDI growl! 😊

That's a great point. The turbo idi with the fuel pump turned up a flat or two actually outdoes the PSD, and is available with more transmissions and body styles. The PSD is now reaching 25 years old or so, and the electronics are starting to become a risk Factor.

I was on Facebook today, and there's a 1990s BMW station wagon with an inline 6 diesel 5 speed manual for sale it's actually on auction. It has less than 100,000 miles. And it's a car that we weren't allowed to have but now it's being auctioned in America. I would love to see you drive that car whoever owns it. Maybe you could try to figure out who owns that car and do a video on that

It says to start in 2nd ALWAYS in any ZF5 and t19, right in the owners manual. Just keep that in mind. Obviously on a hill you use 1st. It's choice, it's nice. These need a turbo. These NEED A PAYROMETER. Honestly, the 6.9 is worse than the 7.3 IDI in every way. Weird filter setups, ZF5 is way better than t18-t19 usually paired with the 6.9... the bricknose looks just as good as the bullnose... The 7.3 has stronger head studs and takes 4 psi of turbo normally.

IDI stands for Indirect Injection, meaning the fuel is injected into a pre-combustion chamber. Back in the pre-electronic diesel era this was the preferred setup for fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, at the expense of power output. The 6.9 IDI was enlarged to a 7.3 IDI, and then the 7.3 was fitted with direct injection (DI) and electronic engine management and a turbo and becamevthe 7.3L powerstroke. Allvwere extremely reliable and durable workhorses. These were all produced by International, as were the 6.0L and 6.4L diesel disasters that came after the 7.3L powerstroke. After that fiasco, Fotd separated from International and created the 6.7L Powerstroke in house. That disaster of an engine is 100% Ford's failure, no help from International on that waste of iron and aluminum.

IDI stands for "indirect diesel injection " which means instead of injecting fuel directly into the combustion chamber like in modern diesels like the Powerstroke it has a pre chamber, it was made by international/ Navistar but so was the Powerstroke until 2011; Powerstroke was just the name ford gave to their versions of the International engine, for example the International's version of the 7.3 Powerstroke was called the T444E which is a pretty unique engine caue it was a HEUI injection which was a joint project between International and Caterpillar engine companies

My dad had an 87 F350 with the 460 V8 and that thing was a massive POS from the start. 460 was a great engine but thats where the positives of the truck ends. Had horrible front end issues, impossible to align, had a steering rack issue that the dealer or anyone else could ever figure out. That was my dad's last Ford and after he sold in in '90 he bought his GMC (which he still has with over 660k mi) and never touched Ford again
