1987 MK2 VW Scirocco 16V Walk-around & Drive

Wasn't anticipating another car project, but picked up this '87 Scirocco 16V recently. It has over 200k miles and the project list is long on this one.

Those oversized American bumpers are hideous. Other than that I am sure you are going to enjoy this car once done. Tappets didn't seem to rattle to much. VW mechanics in the UK had a pet name for the 16V engines 'rattle boxes'.

Yeah, those bumpers are rather ridiculous. Once I get the higher priority repairs out of the way, I may look into sourcing some Euro bumpers. As for the engine, sometimes it fires up and runs smoothly, yet other times it will have a somewhat loud tapping noise. Not sure why it's intermittent like that.

I believe it is ware on the seals on the tappets, and is a common compliant. Easy fix though. With that mileage on the dial, I would have expected them to be louder. Maybe they have been replaced in the past.
