1987 Peugeot 505 V6 Motorweek Review

Maybe it's just me, but I never found this car's styling to be dated, even today. Yes, it's boxy, but that's what gives it character.

And not even that boxy compared to many other cars from the same time. I do prefer the looks of the interior of the earlier 505s though, it was more clean, classic, but of course it had fewer functions also. I do miss my -83 505 Sti (2165cc 4-cyl petrol engine, 117hp), though a more powerful engine and new gearbox wouldn't hurt. LOL

Completely agree. This car had timeless styling, I still love the way it looks today! Always had a soft spot for the 505! I dont think they were most reliable cars ever made but if looked after they were durable and sturdy, and they had such a lovely soft ride!

@@RoadCone411 Those 505 like the 504 were very reliable, you can still see them in Africa and many of them have more than 500 000km on the clock. Back then the Germans dubbed it the "French Mercedes".

@@07wmtc No, they were durable but not reliable. There is a difference. The electrics were finicky and they used to have problems with their air conditioning and emissions systems, as I recall. Still, if looked after, the basic mechanics were solid and the car would provide many years of rugged service (like Volvos from back then.) I wish my family had one - this car was more desirable than Audis of the period, in my opinion.

@@RoadCone411 In France I know, many people Who had 505 ans 504, taxi drivers the cars with minimal maintenance (oil changes), did 500 000kms, without any issues. In Africa, they still run, with simple maintenance, the 605 which was the successor was unreliable, for the first tears production.

Thanks for a great video, brings back lots of memories. I had the exact same car but with a turbo engine. Same Winchester gray with blue leather interior in college. Service was expensive and the dealership was a little small shack of a building that looked like it hadn’t been updated since the 50s. But boy did they know Peugeot’s! But they still cudnt figure out that yellow blinking light on the dash that wud cause the car to totally shut down, most of time while I was on a long distance trip. But man was it a nice drive on the interstate. I heard that PSA merged with FCA and their return to the US is imminent. So hopefully a new 508 will end up in my driveway soon.

Learning to drive with this car, I loved it. My family had an '86 505 Turbo. I remember the leather steering wheel felt amazing, the seats were so comfortable, and the car was rock solid on the road. The maintenance, though, just became too much to handle.

Dude I had a 81 turbo diesel with a 5 spd. At the same time we had a 87 Volvo 760 with this PRV engine. Later we bought the last yr of The 760. A 1990 with the PRV Alll just wonderful cars!

I had an 86 Peugeot 505 GL that I lost and miss very much. There is nothing dated about it's design... it's timeless. Too bad it's impossible to maintain these cars in the US.

It came with metric wheels for which you couldn’t find tires. I owned a 505 GL and once test drove this model. Delightful vehicles.

Early 505's came with TRX metric tires, but they notice it was a bad thing and they offer also 15 inch rims on later models

Funny, as far as I know they came with 14" or 15" wheels in Sweden. Mine had 14" steel rims and I dreamed of getting 15" aluminium rims instead. Never happened, but my Peugeots after that have all had aluminium rims, and larger than 14". :p

@@Mikkemeister I had narrow steel rims and wider alloy rims on mine, the latter coming from a mechanic’s parts car. They’d have done better in the USA with simple improvements like a supplementary service manual with detailed info about the CA smog control system, which they implemented here for all US models. I was curious and eventually stumbled on all the car’s quirks, but among my mechanic’s parts cars I saw too many with miles which were lower than you’d expect, given the durability of the drivetrain.

That "PRV" V6 is such a turkey of an engine. Defiled many cool cars like this Puegot, the DeLorean, any brick Volvo guy will tell you to get a 4 cylinder and not the V6.

I have read horror stories, but that could be internet forum bias. They cranked out close to a million of them for a quarter century and stuffed them into a myriad of cars from dozen marques, it couldn't have been all that bad.

Only time i seen a 505 or any Peugeot in Canada was back in the mid 90's, Sitting on a river bank, half full of sand, near the Othello Tunnels in B.C. with the keys in the ignition.

In 1989 I had a 84 model sti turbo diesel manual. It was slow and broke down often, but it was easy to work on and I loved the car. It was my first car after going directly from a bike to that car at 16 years old.

@@peugeot505man I can't remember the specific engine but it had to be a 4cyl turbo diesel for that year model in the u.s. Since it was a manual and diesel was 79-89 cents a gallon in those days, that car would run forever. I used to for my first job as a local courier. Needless to say, the mileage expense checks far exceeded the fuel consumption prices. I absolutely loved that car. The problems were not major, just often. I taught myself how to drive it, so I ran through a few clutch assemblies before I got it together. I literally hated to get rid of the car since it had sentimental value to me.

Fun, albeit useless trivia fact that will surprise absolutely no Peugeot fans, but might surprise some Porsche fans: Porsche originally wanted to call the 911 "Porsche 901", but Peugeot took them to court & won, using the argument that they had the naming rights to cars with 3-digit numbers that had 0 as the middle digit.

They were going to triple sales. But the Benz 300E W124 was the new pinnacle. Seems like many folks just saved an extra year for that. BMW and Audi had great products too. Peugeot makes great cars though.

@@fields1 The reliability was much better than today. My dads 505 wagon ( now my car) has 250k on it. He also has a 96 E300 with 259k on it. Although they have issues they are much better than any European car being sold today.

@@peugeot505man the French seemed to have a lot of issues with reliability in the 80s-2000s. Mercedes was still building great products up until the late 90s when they acquired Chrysler. The DaimlerChrysler years weren’t very good. We had a 2000 E320 Wagon and it lived in the shop more than it did on the road. After 6 years and only 70,000 miles we sold it and got a Lexus LS430. That car is still on the road today 15 years later with over 110,000 miles. My mother bought a Mercedes E400 Wagon to replace the Lexus as her daily driver. It has been much better in terms of reliability than the 2000 E320, knock on wood. VWAG and BMW also suffered quite a decline in reliability in the 90s-2000s. That’s why I said most European brands seem to have struggled in the 80s-2000s, at different points in that timeframe. I think you’re pretty lucky to still have a 505 on the road today. I haven’t seen one in over 10 years. There aren’t very many left.

I really apreciate Peugeot cars, nice styling, perfect handling, but in my country people considers as a not reliable cars, the maintence is not easy sometimes, because of fragile suspension, unreliable automatic gearbox, eletronic failures, etc. By the way Peugeot is nice for people who cares about the car maintence and the design is very nice

I can’t tell you anything about any Peugeot’s made in the last 30 years since we don’t get them in the U.S. My dad had three Peugeot diesels, and still owns two of them, and they both still run.

@@peugeot505man Thanks for the video! I hope Peugeot can return to the US soon. They've been selling down here in Australia forever. The new Pugs are wonderful, from 2014 on with the new EMP2 platform. Very well built, solid, reliable, comfortable and a lot of fun when you feel like pressing on. You just need a good French mechanic to work on them. The dealers are spread pretty thin on the ground and service is lacklustre.

@@cheffashaba No more internally manufactured shockabsorbers from 2011, thus less durable shockabsorbers, which is a big shame coz by the time of the 406, they were manufacturing shocks that could last 300k or 20years with frequent rough road use.

How so? Angular, 3 box saloons fell out of fashion as the 80s progressed, to be replaced by more rounded, aerodynamic vehicles. The 505's successors, the 405 and 605, looked very different.

Too bad, the lineup was so good through the 504. My Dad's 505 wagon needed all manner of warranty work, including amended transmission and transaxle. Four months later the turbo locked-on. After 35 days in the service bay, it never ran the same. Maybe our incident was isolated, but the company eventually left the U.S. You couldn't kill the 504 diesel -- except by turning off the ignition key!

Well, I have one 84 505 TD SW and my dad has one as well 84 505 TD 5 spd. I did see one in September, it was a 85 505 TD Sti with only 65k on it with the original owner. The PRV 505s are hard to come by because they didn’t sell as many and they were not as reliable as your typical 4 cylinder 505.

My Dad had a 505 diesel in the 80s. No car went down the road as comfortably as a Peugeot. As a kid I had a love hate relationship with the car. It looked cool but the diesel fumes and clatter were awful.

Hm. The build quality was disappointing. I had one-surprising problems with degrading rubber parts. Electronics also. Peugeot was going towards bankruptcy those days. They were so left behind in all aspects, but mostly the build quality. A total remake of company organization and production lines was needed. Then they managed to launch the 205 (le sacré numero) and win world championship rallies with the hottest hot hatch ever. Of course, the 205 T16 had nothing to do with the street-legal 205 GTI but the marketing trick worked like magic. PSA (the company making Peugeot and Citroen cars) was saved. 505 soldiered on in Africa, probably still does. It was a rugged, simple construction, with no nonsensical novelties. I would not ever buy another Peugeot. The French do not understand the concept of 'quality' at all. In the automotive world, it means that you can only have one car and be sure it takes you whenever you want to go wherever you want to go. If you go, French, you need another car on the side, just in case.

My Dad worked on the docks taking these of these ships in the 80’s... he said they were already beginning to rust out just from the ship ride across the Atlantic! The LeCar tho had it the worst. Shame.

Lol. I live on the Gulf Coast. Owned a 505GL for 25 years. Throughout rustproofed with a waxy coating. Body panels were copper plated, then primed and painted. No rust whatsoever. (But I took good care of it.)
