Found a bad choke pulloff, causing the choke to be too rich. Let's see if that fixes it.

Great tip for how to check the vacuum choke pull off assembly. Thanks and Semper Fi!

Definitely sounds different running cold id say. And that sounds like one hell of a good battery with how quick that was cranking.

gah! thank you! you're the only source I found that has the connector for the choke thermostat pictured, mine was disconnected on my 1980 corvette when I bought it used and we couldn't figure out which one it was
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage12 жыл бұрын
It'll work but not well. The white connector on the left is the TPS(throttle position switch), the blue one on the top is the mixture control solenoid.

I think i found the issue to my bloop bloop bloop engine (78 cadillac 425) when i fire it up in the morning. I replaced the choke thermostat but now im thinking it's this. And the way you checked it will help me to check mine. Thanks.

You can pull the hose to the vacuum unloader off at the carb and suck on it to see if the unloader has a busted diaphragm.

@retrochad Yep, that's the electronic version. I've heard some small-block Chevies spin fast like this one and some spin quite a bit slower...it must just be based on the health of the starter motor.
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage11 жыл бұрын
Possibly, but more likely the choke is out of adjustment. Check the pull-off with a vacuum source...

Thanks dude very helpful I didn't even know what that did cause my caprice is doing the blub blub blub blub at time and sometimes floods cause the choke isn't opening up thanks a lot

with those mixture control solenoids, mainly with the dual jet carbs, why did they tick like a clock when key is first turned to "on" before you hit start ? My 84 GP used to do that.....

Sir I have watched all the videos that you have posted about the Quadrajets. I am a Novice Mechanic. I am working on a 86 Chevy Monte Carlo. On the Quadrajet that I have I am referring to the Vacuum breaker. Even after the engine reachs operating temp. The Vacuum breaker is not releasing Vacuum to allow the Secondaries to open at all. Do you have some helpful advice for me so I may fix this problem?
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage11 жыл бұрын
It should be there on the driver-side of the carb, facing forward, tight up against the baseplate. It should just take a phillips or flate screwdriver. Those engines usually have a idle positioner that kicks the idle slightly when the air is on, so if so you might not be able to do much with the base idle screw.

Wow, that starter almost sounds like a 6-volt tractor starter cranking on 12 volts, it's pretty fast! Is that an electronically controlled Quadrajet? I have never worked on a Quadrajet personally but probably I'll come across one someday.

would a bad choke pull off cause hard starting and a very rich condition? 1973 cutlass with 54k miles
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage11 жыл бұрын
I think you got more problems than just the pull-off. Probably time to pull the top off and see what's going on with the float and especially the needle and seat.

I'm looking for the TPS on the carb because my CHECK ENGINE lite comes on after a few minutes on my 87 regal . You say white wire on left & I don't see what your mean .
@DominiAeternum3 жыл бұрын
It's half inside the carb, on the front drivers side of the carb. You gotta take off the top end of it. There's a video on switching a TPS on a sbc Rochester Quadrajet on KZbin, forgot the name. The wiring is visible with the air cleaner off, but to actually replace it you'll need to take the top part of it off.

hey tyler i just wanted to ask. what is connected to the stick that is attached to the actual choke plate at the top. i see it goes into the carb but what is it connected too?
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage10 жыл бұрын
The choke assembly has a part of it that sticks into a small chamber under where that rod drops down. There's a small metal "link" that rides on that choke part, and then the choke rods fits into that. What it DOES is, when the choke is cold and the element spring is wound tight, it rotates that link and thus pulls the choke rod down and the choke flap closed. The opposite happens as the choke element warms and unwinds.
@powergolem8910 жыл бұрын
WhoSaidTyler ok thank you. its just that i removed the thermostat because the clamp in there was not hitting the metal flap that is in there. so when i fixed it and reattached it i noticed that the rod is all loose, so it came off the metal link thats in there which is also connected to the thermostat flaps. i just wanted to know if i have to take the carb apart to fix it?
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage10 жыл бұрын
powergolem89 Not necessarily, but usually it's much easier to pull the airhorn off. If the carb is running ok but hasn't been rebuilt in a while it wouldn't be much work to throw in a new needle/seat and airhorn gasket while you are in there. Just snug the airhorn screws, not tight tight.
@powergolem8910 жыл бұрын
WhoSaidTyler wait which part is the airhorn? i mean the car turns on now since the flap is closed but when i hit the gas the choke plate opens but won't close when i let go of the gas since the choke rod is loose and not in place with the metal link you mentioned.
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage10 жыл бұрын
powergolem89 See that spare part in the video above, that's the airhorn. The top section of the carb.

did u have wverythin hooked what can i take off of my ccc qjet that i dont need
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage7 жыл бұрын
Well, I've explained different times that there ISN'T anything that can be taken off and thrown away. With a computer-controlled Qjet, it's all or nothing. In other words, use it hooked up and functional, or take it off and use a mechanical Qjet. Anyway, they are only computer-controlled on the primary side, the secondary side is purely mechanical like any other Qjet.
