Check out this 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon that we just pulled out of Montana. This is going to be Stacey's new ride and we are very excited to get it back on the road and put it into service. Thanks for watching JC.

Hard-top Wolfsburg Edition Vanagon: There were Wolfsburg models offered in the many years of the Vanagon hard-top. The '87-'89 Wolfsburg edition hard-top Vanagon has a flip-up table and two quick-release, rear facing seats behind the front seats (in lieu of the forward facing bench seat commonly found in non-Wolfsburg Vanagon hard-tops). All Wolfsburg edition hard-top Vanagons from '87-'89 have a full curtain set that snaps in place (no tracks). Also, all of these models have the rear seat that folds into a bed and the accompanying rear cushion. The non-Wolfsburg edition Vanagon hard-top did not necessarily come with a folding rear seat, although most did. In 1990 and 1991, the Wolfsburg edition was replaced by the Carat, which has the same table, jump seat, and bed layout. The Carat models came with all of the creature comfort options-A/C, power door locks, power windows, cruise control-whereas the option levels of the various years of Wolfsburg edition hard-tops varied. All models were available in either 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transaxle.

I dont know like you guys in the us, but here in europe i understand it more like: wolfsburg edition is top class of multivan. other than bed, table, back to back seat it has el. mirrors, plastic bumpers, sqare headlights, central locking, tinned windows... full package. Carat was something else. More like Airport taxi: 4 luxury seats, table, no bed. This car is absoult mint and the engine... everything is better than stock.

when the vanagons 1st came out l thought they were so ugly, now over time ive grown fond of them, and they drive real nice unless its windy, yours looks like a great starting point for sure,
@Rustbelt_Research7 жыл бұрын
I still think later vanagons are pretty ugly, but they are very nice to drive.
@Volkswear7 жыл бұрын
The Vanagon really is a well built vehicle and they drive so nice. If only they could have come up with a little better engine design and a bit more power they would have been the perfect vehicle. I'm excited to adopt this one into the family. JC.

Looks good! I love them all, however, there's just something about the old body style that I love. I'm going to take one final look at the 79' tomorrow before I buy it. I'm so excited to finally be a VW owner! Thank you for your videos...I use them as a tool to know what to look for and to learn. Have a great day -Jamie

Nice vanagon! I used to have 1984 VW Westfalia and kept bringing it to the mechanic in SB and every time they charged me $300+ for fixing it and cost me lost of dollars. So ended selling the van to the mechanic that I knew and gave me $1,500 for the vanagon at that time I needed to get rid of it because it’s costing too much to maintain the vehicle.

Pop-top Wolfsburg Edition Vanagon: There were many different Wolfsburg edition models available with a pop-top. For example, in 1984 there were Wolfsburg edition full campers with a higher trim level and two-tone paint job, but were otherwise identical to a non-Wolfsburg full camper. In '85, '86, and '87, a special edition called the Wolfsburg Weekender was offered in both 2WD and 4WD (Syncro). That model has a pop-top and upstairs bed, like all Westy full campers from '80-'91, but no fridge, stove, sink, or cabinet assembly. Instead, the rear seat is full width to accomodate three adults (rather than the shorter seat in full campers that only accomodates two). Behind the driver's seat, the Wolfsburg Weekender has a rear facing seat with storage underneath. These particular models also came factory-equipped with a 2nd battery system and an all-electric cooler that sat behind the passenger seat and was held down to the floor with two thumb screws. In 1990 and 1991, the Wolfsburg Weekender was replaced by the Multivan (MV) model. The MV model has an almost identical interior layout as the Wolfsburg Weekender: same upstairs bed arrangement, same cabinet in the left rear corner, same full-width bench seat. But the rest of the interior (and, in fact, the trim level) is identical to the Carat. And, similar to the Carat, the MV came fully equipped with every factory option (unlike the Wolfsburg Weekender, with widely varied options). Both the 2WD Wolfsburg Weekender and Multivan were available in either 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transaxle. The Wolfsburg Weekender Syncro-as with any Syncro-was not available in automatic. The Multivan was never offered as a Syncro, either.

Check the oil pressure with a gauge. I have a near identical vanagon that had the same symptoms as yours. Mine had good oil pressure and both the oil pressure switches were good. My problem was in the oil pressure switch wiring harness, I replaced the connection and no more oil pressure light/buzzer. GoWesty has a nice write up on their website about it. Nice looking bus!

The Wolfsburg engine and drive train is German made. Most of the others are hecho in Mexico. The aluminum castings are significantly better in germany. The patina of the aluminum is the indicator.

Could the low oil pressure not be cured by new main and big end shell bearings? Obviously as long as the crank is not scored.... That model is known as the transporter caravelle here in the U.K.

Myself, I would likely have swapped the Forester engine into the Vanagon. Kennedy makes a very nice adapter. I've owned several bugs and a couple of buses. But VW lost my allegiance when they got so snotty toward the air cooled crowd when they were pushing their water cooled vehicles. Since then I've become very impressed with Subaru. Same basic flat four engine design, but WAY better engineered. Way easier maintenance as well. (Not to mention HP!)

@sunwolfyvan7 жыл бұрын
thats a '87 wolfsburg. the wolfsburg medallion was removed by someone and reattached in the wrong place. it should be a few inches higher and in line with the beltline stripe. in '88 they were called wolfsburgs too. The carat didnt come out until '89. the '87 wolfsburg was the only one that did not have the fiberglass sideskirts. the '88-'91 did. btw, that black plastic tray that is sitting on the front pass floor is a rare jumpseat tray...sits behind the jumpseat.. anyway throw another oil PSi sender in it... the 2.1 wbx with the hi and lo dynamic oil psi gauges are always kinda funky. i bet that engine is fine, just needs a oil psi sender..... btw - love the 5.0 badge on the rear :)

vibration, tapping noise are collapsed hydraulic valve lifters, usually they will quit down and maybe the engine will stop vibrating

I haven't done an update video on it although I have been meaning to. I replaced all the fuel lines, changed the oil, set timing and got it fired up and the engine is sadly no good. I am trying to decide what route to take with the replacement engine. I would really like to do a Subaru Conversion on this bus but may end up putting a stock 2.1 back in it. Thanks for watching. JC.
