Great video! I had a friend rebuild a 1985 XR600R. He had access to a sand blaster and used that to strip the painted parts. Kind of messy but very effective at stripping paint and corrosion.... The bike had been ridden in the gulf coast region of Texas. Anyone from that area knows how badly the salt air environment are on mechanical items. He blasted it in California and the bike is still going strong.

You sure did put a smile on your kid's face. you should sand 800-2500 the tank and polish it. it'll look new.

Is that how they're making the tanks look new? I will definitely try that on the next one!

I wouldn't say it's an absolute highest end restoration, but im sure he wasn't trying to. Now that's out the way absolute cracking job of making an old bike look in excellent usable condition that's looking very clean and fresh. Great video I love the layout love the way the video was filmed bike was done to an excellent Do it yourself shed restoration that was cost effective but still the bike looks amazing. Very impressed 👏

Man I really enjoyed that, brings back so many good memories, i had a yz80s and a yz80t, the 80’s dirtbikes were my best times, even though ive owned 125’s,250’s and 500’s but being a kid on an 80 was simply the best. Im 52 now and I don’t ride anymore but after watching this video id love to restore one to have in my lounge room. Great job mate 👌

I raced a 1985-model in my youth. My dad and I stripped it like you did and built it back with the best parts available. It was a rocketship, the guys on 1992 Suzukis ate my dust on the track even though they had a more linear powerband. The YZ was nothing, nothing and BOOM, everything. Great memories of both working with my dad and racing th YZ.

If you removed the gas tank and filled it with water and took a torch it would remove the discoloration. If done correctly it would look almost new again.
