The Circuit of Ireland was reduced to a more modern format in 1988, but still an epic 730 road and stage miles. It started in Belfast but in tribute to Dublin city's millennium anniversary, the route finished there. This was the era of Sierra Cosworths but with strong challenges from front wheel drive Peugeots and Opel/Vauxhalls. Jimmy McRae was going for a record sixth win to topple Paddy Hopkirk's record on the event.
