Aguirre, Blackman, Perkins, Harper. Donaldson, with Tarpley off the bench (at center?) Built year by year through the draft. Management hit on all of them. Just look up the stats, they could ALL score, & Aguirre & Blackman prolifically! Always wondered why 1988 was there only trip that far in the playoffs,& I mean all the years before that. All those guys were there,& they weren't rookies. Wrong fit at head coach? Team chemistry? They had so much talent there were guys who didn't get on the floor in Dallas much, and went on to have great careers like Dale Ellis

The team didn’t reach its full potential in the regular season until 1986-87. The league was so damn competitive in those days. Even with all that talent, it needed time to gel. Then, they choked as the 2 seed. What they accomplished in 1988 was what they ought to have done in 1987. I think they might’ve at least made the Finals in 1988 if they had played better in 1987 when it mattered most. To me, Roy Tarpley was the MVP of that team. If he had been able to keep building on top of what he fulfilled in 1988, they’d have stayed relevant for years to come, as well, but he couldn’t get out of his own way.

They did pass on Charles Barkley, Karl Malone in the draft and also didn’t find a place for Dale Ellis or Detlef Schrempf.

There were many factors that led to the demise of the Dallas Mavericks. One was the fact that they fell behind schedule with the upset special of 1987. In other words, the team in 1988 should’ve been the team in ‘87. By 1989, Aguirre’s uneven leadership reached a breaking point and Tarpley’s off court habits had spilled over into his career. To me, those were the two most valuable pieces on that team. They almost recovered without them in time to make the playoffs, but came up short. 1990 was merely a brief reprieve. The rest of the decade was largely a nightmarish disaster, chalked full of injuries, inconsistent ownership and leadership and underachieving talent.

Mark Aguirre wasn't comfortable implementing the intangible ingredient of traditional leadership, to be the preeminent player who's presence could direct a franchise to a NBA championship,or at minimal,a appearance in the cherished game . He wasn't a authentic superstar ,his hierarchy was that of a excellent star player who's psychological makeup was more inclined to be a supporter for a superstar,as oppose to the #1 guy . His game was tailored to only accommodate him ,poor defender ,a grudging passer , avg rebounder , introverted persona meant he lacked sufficient skills in navigating the multiple personalities within a lockerroom ,grasping the context of how to stimulate,or at times temper the decorum of his teammates ,controlling the spectrum of a lockerroom through his wisdom ,sometimes through being a tyrant,or congenial,when it was a necessity , a hug and a smile or ,a angry grit, agressive,sometimes passive agressive, assets a unquestionable alpha leader must posses ,tools Mark Aguirre possesed out side the lockerroom in his personal life ,but displayed only minimally in the Mavericks lockerroom . It's not coincidental his 2 NBA championships came with another franchise ,a team who already possesed a true alpha leader superstar in Isiah Thomas who embodied all of the intangible prerequisites of a leader , and was relentless in implementing as the teams #1 player . Those talented and deep roster 88 Mavericks without the physically gifted but obviously troubled Roy Tarpley could have been a top echelon NBA championship contender ,they were missing a superstar to guide them .
