Thanks for putting this compilation together. It was an intense series and a heartbreaker for Mets fans. Such a solid fun team just came up short and Hershiser was tough.

Has anyone noticed that games 4 and 5 ended the same way with Shelby catching a shallow fly to center? He also nearly won game 1 if he would have been playing normal depth. It seemed like the Dodger's fate was in his glove almost.
@ATCguy19735 жыл бұрын
Very true. He also had the biggest at bat in the series working out a walk after falling behind 0-2. His walk set up the tying home run for scocia.

So far the 2024 NLCS mirrors this series exactly: The Mets were heavily favored over the Dodgers in the 1988 NLCS. The Dodgers are heavily favored over the Mets in the 2024 NLCS. 1988 NLCS: Mets win Game 1, Dodgers win Game 2, Mets win Game 3. 2024 NLCS: Dodgers win Game 1, Mets win Game 2, Dodgers win Game 3. The heavily favored team up 2-1 winning Games 1 and 3, the underdog Game 2. 1988 NL MVP: Kirk Gibson (Dodgers) 2024 NL MVP: Shohei Ohtani (Dodgers) 1988 NL MVP runner-up: Darryl Strawberry (Mets) 2024 NL MVP runner-up: Francisco Lindor (Mets) The Dodgers had home-field advantage in the 1988 NLCS. The Dodgers have home-field advantage in the 2024 NLCS. In Game 3 in 1988, neither team scored in the first inning while the winning team scored twice in the second. In Game 3 in 2024, neither team scored in the first inning while the winning team scored twice in the second.

Just found another similarity: In 1988, after the 3 games at Shea Stadium were played, the Giants faced the Eagles. In 2024, after the 3 games are played at Citi Field, the Giants will face the Eagles.

Thats unreal the Mets Dodgers playoff series was 30 years ago. I was 18 in 1988. The 2 plays that killed the Mets was the Mike Scioscia home run off Gooden in Game 5. Then i remember in game 4 Kirk Gibson hit a game winning home Run in Extra innings against Roger Mcdowell that beat the Mets at Shea Stadium.

The Mets were the better team but the Dodgers were playing better. Mets dominated them during the season. Hershiser was Mike Scott except the Mets had to face him more than once.

Brian Leetch The Dodgers lost the first two games Orel started in this series, he was only a factor bc the Mets collapsed in Game 4
@TMC1982Part23 жыл бұрын
And people may not remember that Orel Hershiser was a key factor in the Cleveland Indians going to the World Series in 1995. He was the MVP of that year's ALCS against the "Refuse to Lose" Seattle Mariners.

@@amazinmets8439 If the Mets lost that 16 inning long game in the 1986 NLCS and had to face Mike Scott in Game 7 at the Houston Astrodome, then they don't go to the World Series. I'll put all of my money on that one. Like you said, Mike Scott in 1986 was like Orel Hershiser in 1988 in that he was, pitching wise in the National League, the guy. Scott beat the Mets both physically and psychologically that year.

just a theory. i know that jesse orosco was not happy about his role with the dodgers and we all know how tight the 1986 team was. so im just curios who tipped the mets off about the pine tar in jay howells glove?
@amazinmets84397 жыл бұрын
This really hurts watching these news clips. Mets beat LA I think 10 of 11 in the regular season...pretty much dominated them. Then lose a heart breaking 7 game post season series to them. We were a much better team than LA that year. I think the Mets would have beaten Oakland in the World Series in 1988. We'll never know I guess. Pisses me off every time I see Gimpy Gibson with his home run in Game 1 of the World Series. He shouldn't have even been there, it should've been the Mets. =(
@dannyboy346774 жыл бұрын
If it were the Mets v Oakland in 1988 in that World Series, I think the Mets would’ve won maybe in 7 games. These would’ve likely been the matchups: Game 1 - Oakland (Stewart) at Mets (Doc) Game 2 - Oakland (Davis) at Mets (Cone) Game 3 - Mets (Darling) at Oakland (Welch) Game 4 - Mets (Doc) at Oakland (Stewart) Game 5 - Mets (Fernandez) at Oakland (Davis) Game 6 - Oakland (Welch) at Mets (Cone) Game 7 - Oakland (Stewart) at Mets (Darling) Oakland had six days off between sweeping the Red Sox and game one of the World Series. Now they would have had to travel cross-country that might’ve gotten to them a little bit in a Game 1, but don’t kid yourself, Oakland was a powerhouse that won 104 games and swept Boston in the ALCS and as good as the Mets bullpen was that year with Myers on the backend, Oakland had a stud in Eckersley on the back end of their ‘pen and was the MVP of the ALCS. That would’ve been a great series had they met that year.
