Darrell Waltrip was one of the best at being patient and not abusing his equipment. That's why he was so successful in races at Martinsville and Bristol where brakes needed to be saved.

I have a soft spot for the small tracks. When we had NASCAR in Australia during the late 80s and through the 90s, my home track (Adelaide International Raceway) was a half mile oval and one of only 2 paved ovals in Australia, the other being the 1.119 mile Calder Park Thunderdome which is a mini-Charlotte in shape right down to the 24° banked turns. Adelaide (AIR) is virtually flat like Martinsville, (7° turns 1, 2 & 3 with turn 4 flat as the oval also formed a permanent part of a 1.5 mile road course and turn 4 of the oval was also the road course pit exit and NASCAR pit entry) though at AIR the turns are longer and the straights are shorter than Martinsville. This made the average speed much less (78 mph) even though AIR's oval is only 42 metres shorter.

NASA Rick Hendrick's power. Good old DW. Ricky Rudd had a great car that Buick was the car to beat. That Valve spring took him out with under 100 laps to go. Good race.

In the last several races of 1988, the main storyline was: Ricky Rudd dominates, then blows up. He won at Watkins Glen, but probably coulda won a half dozen races if the engines hadn't come unglued.
