I was a technician at a Honda dealership in 1988. These were great cars, they had soul. I used to install the air conditioners in the DX and LX models (standard on LXI). Yes, they had amazing shifters back then. Just a joy to work on too…

Thin paint and sheetmetal. Bad AC compressors (Mine was replaced twice by Honda under warranty.). Terribly underpowered 98HP carburated 2 liter engine in the DX/LX versions. Rust prone sheetmetal. All and all, to me the Toyota Camry of the time was a bit better and could be had with a V6 (Accord didn’t get a V6 until 1995). And yes I owned a 1989 Honda Accord LX sedan 5-Speed in Laguna Gold Metallic bought brand new from Honda dealer in early 1989 for $14,500 plus taxes, tag and fees (Equivalent to $36,912.32 in 2024 Dollars).

Parents had one of these new but an LX auto. The transmission did something weird. Under load the torque converter would lock up and lug the engine. Light load it would spin up. Basically doing opposite of what an auto normally does. Any ideas what that was?

Right! The steering and suspension on these cars was great. It was soft yet very precise with little body roll and the low front made it feel like a go-kart. In the highway it felt like a Chevy Caprice of the 70s. Even the sound system was superb!

@@marcusdamberger Yup! My 1990 Legend has a fully mechanical variable power steering system too and it's very noticeable. The first time I drove it I hated how light the steering was, but quickly changed my opinion once I got up to 30 MPH and felt how tight it got. Very well designed system IMO, especially considering the 1st gen Legend came out in 1985 and the system has no electronics. I believe the last mainstream car Honda made with variable hydraulic power steering was the 1993 Accord. The newer Hondas (and most other cars) with electric power steering are programmed for a variable assist too and that generally works quite well, but at least the few I drove don't have anywhere near the obvious transition from ultra light to sturdy that these older Hondas do.

I’m a novice manual driver at best. As a kid in the 80s, we had a long big driveway and my dad would like me pull the cars out for him. With his 1985 bmw, I remember the clutch was so heavy I could barely press it w my 9 yo leg. When I drove someone else’s Honda accord of this gen, it was feathery light to press the clutch. Why was there such a big diff in clutch engagement? Was that a German vs Japanese thing? I miss this gen accord w the low dash.

These Accords from this era were hands down some of the best cars available. That manual was the best in the industry by far. So much fun to drive. I also own 8 gen CU2 Accord 2012 2.2 CTDI and it's been massive disappointment. Had 4 Accords before it and they were far better built in every way. I could see the massive cuts literally everywhere. The inside door panels are made of cheap hard plastic! The whole car is made of kitchen foil and there are rust spots around the arches already ( on a 2012 car!! ) The headlights are just pathetic and the heating is the worst I ever had in a car! The buttons on the center console though, with their minimalist design give you impression of quality but apart from that, the car is just grown up Civic,if not Jazz. The size of the intercooler is of packet cigarettes! Stereo is somewhat acceptable and the seats quite comfy. The rest of the car is just plain cheap junk. Had an E46 10 years older and twice bigger mileage before it and have to say although in the same class, the E46 was way, way, way better car! Can't even compare those two. The E46 was 2002 and didn't had a single rust spot and everywhere you touch, top quality materials and solid built quality. Can't wait to sell it and move to Lexus. Never again Honda.

This is incredible! I grew up with a 1988 Honda Accord LX in a similar (but not identical) blue color that was built in Japan. Sure, it was pretty slow since it only had 98 horsepower, but that thing stayed in our family for 365,000 miles before we donated it to someone in need of something to get around town. My favorite thing about this car is the double wishbone suspension; the ride quality is soft but not floaty and more comfortable than many of today's compact cars that feature fairly stiff front strut/torsion beam rear suspensions. Plus the steering was dead accurate with great on-center accuracy. Original transmission and engine when we finally let the car go; 1980's Japanese engineering for the win!

The first car I bought myself in 1998 was an ‘89 Accord Sedan LX with 140k miles for $2000 and then another $400 or so for a Maaco paint job. That was the last year of the carburetor in the LX. I beat on this car everyday for many years and sold it at 200k miles to someone who drove it mercilessly for another 5-6 years. The reputation for quality and reliability and being fun to drove was formed by this gen Accord. I do think the one after it - 1990-93 - was the best looking Accord body style of all time.

My father had one of these when we lived in Toronto. It was an automatic though. He had it for 8 - 9 years. Very reliable and roomy. Lovely car.

The interior of my 2019 Tahoe is the closest thing that comes to the unique smell of the 86-89 Accords. The smell alone brings back so many great memories. Thank you for this.

Many of the rudimentary cars from the 80s and 90s are truly beautiful and special. I’m a Mercedes and BMW guy but appreciate a fine example like this Honda. Watching this fuels me with passions. When I get to take my W124 E300 diesel out on the weekend I’m reminded how good we had it.

I gotta say, I think it's great that you commented on the smell of the interior of these cars! It's unique and a subtle iconic aspect of these old Hondas. Amazing video, thank you for showing these Hondas the love that they deserve!

When I was in high school, these mid to late-80's Hondas were what we wanted. They were just getting cheap enough to afford, but still new enough to feel "not old". Especially the Prelude. They felt sporty and well-built, and reliable. I remember how great the manual shifted, and the engines sounded so smooth, like a finely made watch - just a high-pitch purr. I took my driving test on an 82 Accord. I wish my 2023 4-cylinder ran as smoothly as that 1982 Accord.

WOW.. just wow.. my parents had a Honda that looked just like this one. I learned to drive a stick shift in that car, went to work with it, all kinds of things. Seeing the LED display for the clock, OMG brings back memories. Years later my Dad sold that car, then about 1.5 years later he got a call from the police saying "Sir we found your car abandoned in the street" and my dad reported he had sold it, somehow the title never got transferred. Thanks for bringing back memories.

1990 Honda Accord LX 5 speed was my first car that my parents bought for me from auction for $750. Did a timing belt on it, suspension work, and brakes. What a truly amazing first car that was to own.

Oh, that brings back memories -- that chime, that engine startup sound and idle, that interior. I had an '87 LXi with the medium powder blue exterior. Interior was lighter than this model but still blue instead of grey or tan. Loved that interior, so simple and well-laid-out and, for me as a sophomore college student, so luxurious over what I was used to. Over time I did upgrade the rear speakers with the kit from the '88-'89 models that allowed 6x9's - '86 and '87 only had 6.5" speakers on the rear deck. And I did have to replace the tape deck with a later-model Honda deck like the one in this video, so apart from the graphic EQ, it's like my car all over again.

So excited to see this in my feed! I am currently in the market for a 3rd gen LX-i sedan as it happens. There were a lot of these built with manuals. I got shut down by my high school classmate who wouldn't let me test drive his back in '99. Not many reviews of these on YT that aren't clapped out, so thank you very much for this video

I had one. 89 LXi 5 speed manual with gold exterior and leather interior. The manual transmission was a gem. Sold it after 3 years and bought a brand new 92 Lexus SC400, another one I regret selling after a 5 years and bought a 1997 BMW E39 540i. After the Bimmer I have had nothing but Toyota (4Runner, Avalon) to back to Lexus (RX350, ES350, NX350h). I am now planning to buy the new Prius as my commuter.

I still consider the 80's peak Honda. Not just the buttery smooth shifter, but the action of the switches, the visibility, the sound of the engine and starter. Everything has a light touch, but it doesn't feel cheap. They were just wonderful.

Great video! Back in 1990 I purchased my first of many Hondas to come. A 1990 Accord LX. I had zero issues/problems with that car. I put 237,000 miles in 5 yrs. I was buying GM cars before that and all of them (6 cars) had many, many problems before they reached 40,000 miles. After my ‘90 Accord, I bought the’95, ‘99, ‘03, ‘09 and 2015 Accords. Loved them all.

About 20 years ago I was given one of these with this exact powertrain as a loaner car while my CRX was in the shop. That copy had over 400K miles on it but she still road and handled wonderfully and the engine was still strong. The fact that it was the shop errand car for a place that specialized in Honda repair certainly helped. To me this was the best generation of Accords they made and it all seemed to go down hill after this. I think part of that was that Acura came on the scene and all the love and care that Honda had been putting into their main lineup was instead devoted to their Acura products instead. I would absolutely buy one of these if I could find it in good condition, especially if I could get the hatchback version.
