These were produced and sold in Brazil as the Volkswagen Parati, a station wagon version of the Volkswagen Gol (not to be confused with Golf), the 1.8L engines are bulletproof and can last very long, or support high turbo pressures if modified properly. We also had a GLS version which was the most complete trim level. You can still fetch one of these nowadays with low mileage for a good price. I wish VW made a AWD version of this wagon.

Way back then, I bought a wagon new. Then a used 2 door sedan and finally a beautiful black 4 door. They were great cars and fun to drive. I moved on to a new 1990 Passat which I owned for 10 years and 200,000 miles. Following these, purchased new were another Passat, Jetta, GTI, R32. Also bought new were 3 Beetles, 98, 03 convertible, 2012(still own). Also owned a TDI sportwagon and a gas sportwagen. Currently driving a 2020 Tiguan. I'm 69 years old. I really enjoyed each and everyone of them. And never had any problems with them.

VW had NO EXCUSE why an automatic transmission wasn’t offered on this car, especially when it was going to be sold in America. The folks who made the decision to not offer an automatic transmission on Fox were IGNORANT. I think this car is cool, but that stupid manual transmission has GOT TO GO; probably over 70% of American drivers drive automatics..

The Sportage had a faulty transmission, so she traded it for a Mitsubishi Galant later that year, and has been leasing Mitsubishis ever since. The Fox got rave reviews but ended up confusing buyers because it was too similar in size and specifications to the Golf and Jetta. VW even had to put a very restrictive "donut" in the exhaust manifold to keep the Fox from being more powerful and faster than them, since it had the same basic 1.8L engine but was lighter. It was also one of the last non-sports-cars in the U.S. that was never available with either an automatic transmission or power steering.

Funny, all those variants on the European Polo, which as a faster version with nicer trim was called the Polo Fox. ( in the case of the Golf it was called the Rabbit). The Polo as a sedan was the Derby, later the Polo Classic. Never ever did Europe have a Gol, or a wagon version of the Polo/Derby/Fox or Parati. Only the Golf had a pick-up version, the Caddy. Only since the Golf mk3 there were stationwagons. The predecessors of wagons only existed in the Passat. Here in Brazil it's an Legendary car! ( *IF YOU WANT TO KNOW IT's HISTORY, ALONG WITH VW's of Brazil History, CONTINUE READING!!!!* It's LONG! ) Thank you!!! :-) It's worth reading if you're a VW Lover! IT HAS 2 PARTS! We had the VW Gol (Hatch), the Vw Saveiro (Pickup), along with the VW Parati (Fox Wagon) And the Voyage (Fox) (I'm mainly talking about the VW Gol here, the original vehicle, because it would be 100x longer if I put the other 3 variants here. So: Still 50x worse than the exported version, with cheaper materials and worsen overall interior, it had INSANE reliability. (It was exported from 1987 to 1995, when it ended production, along with the Voyage production that didn't continue with the rest of the Gol Family, retruning later on) The VW Gol History starts in 1980, the year of release, it was the replacement of the VW Beetle, It came with a Front Wheel drive Engine, a Boxer 1300L from the beetle, it was the second FWD vehicle VW sold here, as all the other VW's Sold were RWD, and Rear Engine, like the Beetle, VW Brasília and many others. (The First VW to be FWD and Water Cooled was the VW Passat B2, that started to be sold here in 1974, and with that, VW HAD to change the old VW Motto that was: "Air cooled NEVER Overheats", that was INSANELY Strong here, and that's why VW had all the hype of the legendary Aircooled vehicles. And slowly but surely, the Water Cooled engine stayed, and was another VW Legacy and legendary engine Here in Brazil (Ea-827)). NOW Continuing: It was a flop, with the anemic 1300L Boxer engine, as it was too slow, later on VW realized the thing they had done and put the 1600 Boxer on it, in 1982, it made the sales go up, along with the overall dynamics of the upgraded engine and power. (The car later on originated the Pickup, Wagon and Sedan). Vw made the vw Gol start to be a well sold car when they introduced the Water Cooled Gol GT In 1984 (The GT was the Sport version of the Vw Gol, with 99hp's, and some said it had more than that, like 103hp's. VW Lowered the numbers because of tax reasons, as if the vehicle had more than 100hp it would have been more expensive to be sold, and this GT version had resemblances of the Rabbit /Golf GTi like the Golf Ball knob in the shifter) The car was a success, making from 0 to 60mph (0 to 100km/h) in amazing 9,7 seconds, beating bigger cars with 4.1L Six Cylinder engines like the GM Opala, the fastest car yet. The top speed was of 180 Km/h (111 MPH) A great achievement at the time. In 1987 VW Facelifted the Gol, Releasing the Gol GTS, an upgraded Gol GT, sport version, with the same but sligtly upgraded 1.8l engine. (1.8S). The GTS had 99Hp's, 167KM/h top speed (104MPH) and a 0-60 of 11 seconds. This same year, the VW Gol reached top sales, staying in the top vehicles sales for 27 YEARS! In 1988 VW released the VW Gol GTi, the upper and top class sport version, as the GTS was (now) one step down, still with a carburated 1.8S engine, The GTi had, at the year of release, the ALL NEW 2.0l AP engine, (Ea-827 2.0l, 8v) with EFI, it was the first car to have Fuel Injection as standard here. It was a BOOM! Everyone was amazed and blown away because of the Electronic Fuel Injection it had. It made whopping 120hp's and was the fastest car available at the time for a while. Gol GTi Numbers: 0-100 (0-60) of 8,8 seconds and top speed of 185 KM/h, 114MPH (Interesting fact: Every other VW or any other car brand or make sold at 1988, had carburated engines, and Yes, pretty late to add EFi if we think about it, but..) After that, all other brands started adding fuel injection in their vehcles, and by 2000's all cars had EFI. ( The Exported version of the Voyage and Parati we NEVER sold here, It was a totally upgraded vehicle, it had OVER 2000 changes or add-ons to make it up to US and Canada legislation specs. If it was sold here, it would be the " Voyage GLS Diamond ", or something like that, being a higher tier than the already existing Voyage GLS (the Voyage GLS was the top tier Voyage in Brazil THere was the CL, GL, and GLS). This GLS sold here was still slightly worse in equipment if we compared it with the " FOX Base " exported car. Weird, isnt it? The GLS here Had A/C and Power Steering as optional, and never had an AUTO transmission. And this Fox had EFi, that no other car had here. the first to have EFI was the GTi. Very weird.) Now back to the history. In the next generation, so-called Gol G2, affectionately known as Gol Bola (Ball Gol?) (Released in late 1994) was a huge upgrade over the previous version. Now ALL VW Gol's had EFi as standard in all versions (Previously only the Gol G1 (Or Gol Quadrado) GTi had it). Even if it was single point injection in lower end versions, The Gol G2 was a smash sucess, but the GTi still had the 2.0L 8v engine. Top speed of the G2 GTI 2.0L 8v was 185 Km/h (115MPH) and 0 to 60 was 11,2 seconds. Chevrolet (General Motors of Brazil) was threatening the Volkswagen Gol GTi G2 "Crown" with it's Newly Released Corsa GSi 1.6 16v, VW quickly responded by upgrading the 2.0l EA-827 engine with a 16v head from Germany, and, before it made 109 hp's on it's 8v version, after the upgrade it made some crazy (At the time) 141hp's! , and It was the fastest car at the time, beating the GM's Corsa GSI top speed of 195,5KM/H (121MPH). The GTi 16v even had a slight " bulge " in the hood to fit the taller engine, that was an awesome fix, as it gave another cool detail to the 16v GTI. (Gol Gti 2000 16v SPECS: 141 Hp, 0-60 of 8,8 seconds and top speed of 206 Km/h or 128MPH, it was The FASTEST car at the time! (Here in Brazil, and the fastest and more powerful VW Gol ever made here). The 3rd generation (Released in 1999) had great technological advances, and some say it was THE BEST and MOST Beautiful VW GOL of ALL TIMES. (Including me). Part II: The New Gol G3, had a new facelift, fully new interior and the interior was kinda inspired in the Mk4 Golf interior, and was the Last Gol To have the GTI Sport model on it's production line. It had the same 2.0 16v EA888 engine as the previous generation, It was AMAZING, it was still the fastest and most powerful Gol ever made, but barely lasted one and a half years, it had 145 hp's, a 0-60 of 8,7 seconds and a top speed of 206km/h 128MPH, and the "Normal" Gol GTI 2.0 8v was out of production.(If I'm not wrong.) There were very rare Gol G3's with the 2.0l 8v ea827 engine, but the GTI never came back in the next generation, the Gol G4. The advancements of the Gol G3 were: The NEW 1.0 16v engine (Ea111) now came with a Turbo, making the Gol 1.0 16v Turbo to be the First production vehicle to came stock from the factory with a Turbo, and VW at the time (Year 2000, the year of the 1.0 16v turbo release) VW Made comparisons to the Gol GTi/Non GTI with the 2.0l engine, to say that the New 1.0L engine had the Performance of the 2.0L Engine, with the Economy of a 1.0L engine, making the same power as the 2.0l NA engine of the 2.0L Gol. (1.0 16V Turbo Specs: 112Hp, 0-60 of 9,5 seconds and top speed of 192kph / 119MPH. Faster than the 2.0l Golf at the time, it was the fastest 1.0L car at the time here. The G3 received Flex Fuel too, in 2003, with the VW Gol Total Flex, with the 1.6l engine (ea827) , making it the first vehicle to run on Gas and or Ethanol in any mix. (VW Gol 1.6L Total Flex Flex specs: 97hp with Gas, 99hp with ethanol, 0-60 of 11,6 seconds, and top speed of 183Km/h / 113MPH.) Now, In the next generations it had significant improvements, The Gol G4 was now the cheapest VW as the New VW FOX (not the one of the 90's) was going to replace it (but it failed) and the Gol G4 was stripped down bad, to make room to the all new Vw Fox. It was still as reliable as any VW. (There were VERY rare G4's with the great interior of the Gol G3, and it was a must have interior on the top versions, as the G4 cheap interior couldn't handle the Airbag system, so they retrofitted the G3 interior on it). The 5th gen Gol G5, had a FULLY NEW Platform, and returned the Voyage to production, that had stopped in 1995 when the Gol G2 was introduced, a dumb VW Move. The Polo was going to replace the voyage but it was a flop. The VW Parati stopped production some time later after the Gol G5 release, as VW had other cars to replace it. The Gol G5 to G8 were good cars, but not even close to having that great reliability of Gen 1 to 4. It still had it's merits of a great car, but it was becoming less and less the Reliable and indestructible car as it once was. The VW Gol was the MOST sold vehicle for over TWO DECADES (28 years) nonstop, from 1987 to 2013, (to show that the VW realiability of the Air Cooled beetle was still present in the next 4th gen's of the VW Gol, G1, G2, G3 and G4, along with the Saveiro Pickup and Parati Wagon, and reliabity of Vw's at that time were not a joke, most of it because of the AP / Ea827 Engine, the engine with most modifications and swaps here, it's a legendary engine, some making over 1000hp's). It sold OVER 8 MILLION vehicles, and it sadly ended production in 2022, with a pathetic 1.0l 3 cylinder engine. The GOL was simply THE "Second Beetle!" (In my opinion) as it was a really successful replacement. That is the history of this cheap but Great car, that was designed and made Here, inspired by the Scirocco and Golf, was exported to various other countries and continents, like US and Canada, and even to Russia, and even having a weird FORD / Renault (CHT) engine in the 90's. (The CHT From Ford was weaker and replaced the VW's 1.6L engine from 1988 to 1993, when the VW 1.6L returned, and the buyer could choose if they wanted the Economy CHT / AE engine or the Performance VW AP Engine, same price for both versions. (CHT specs: 75hp's in the Gas version and 80hp's in the Sugar cane fuel version, 0-60 of around 13 seconds) and It didn't stop the top high sales of the car, and it was another amazingly reliable engine, and it was downsized to 1000cm3 to make the Gol 1000, the CHEAPEST vw gol ever made, a "Popular car Craze" era that started with reduced taxes because of the lower engine size, and a really stripped down version came to life Gol 1000, making crazy 49hp's and a 0 to 60 of about 20 seconds, and a insane top speed of 137kph, 85mph, (it cant go back to the future, lol.) Later on on the Gol G2, VW put a single point EFI on it and offered a Plus version, with optional of AC and Power steering, and Power windows. in 97 VW changed this really old engine and put the EA111 1.0l engine, making the car be 100% quicker, and when it was later modified with a 16v head, it was even more quicker for a 1.0l aspirated engine. 1.0l EA111 specs: 62,5HP's and the 16v having 70 hp's. 1.0 8v 0-60: 18 seconds, top speed:147km/h / 91mph, 1.0l 16v 0-60: 17,5s and top speed of 157kph / 97mph. Ugh... The G3 still had the 8v and 16v engines, this 16v was later fitted with a turbo and the G4 had only the 1.0l 8v engine, The g5 had an upgraded version of this engine that had a scandal for breaking down early even with 101% correct maintenance, that was less bad in the 1.6l version. The AP Still continued production till 2012 with the VW Parati. The Ea111 was upgraded and was still available till 2021. The 3 cylinder engine was added in around 2015. THE END! That is not even 10% of the history of this car, this was just a quick glance of this legendary car. If you made it to here, you are A W E S O M E , and I thank you VERY VERY much, because it took me more than 3 hours to write this, with great care and love, to spread this very cool history of this " not so great and technological " of a car, a peculiarity of VW of Brazil, and changed VW's history, and has a HUGE Cult here. Thank you so much, and have a Great Day, Evening or Night!! Goodbye!! Stay safe! My Family has two VW's, the Gol G1 CL with the Ford Renault CHT engine, 1.6L, and the other one is a Gol G2 4 door, CL, 1.6L, AP engine. Great cars! Any questions just ask! (Sorry if I have any wrong sentences or grammar, I'm still learning English :-).
