I love seeing someone as twp as me travelling miles and miles to collect an auction car. My last 2 were Cheltenham - Near Wrexham (3 trains) last November and last month Cheltenham - Bury St. Edmonds via London (4 trains incuding the tube). I drove a 340 back in the 1990s. One of the best balanced cars for that era that I've ever driven.

The Volvo 300 series was a transformation from the Daf variomatic. Volvo brought daf cars out and rebadged the daf as a Volvo and got rid of the CVT transmission. Interesting fact the 300 series has the gearbox bolted to the back axle. I loved my 360s had a white saloon and red 3door GLT.

Great video 👍those 360 seats either velour or leather are incredibly hard wearing, even the foam used around the seat frame is strong & doesn't crumble like on Sierras or Cavalier's. I changed the heating element on a '86 D reg & the clips Volvo use are very strong.

Great little car, Volvo 300 series definitely an unsung hero of the 80s, when all the fast Ford Escorts and VX Astras got all the plaudits. Your 360 GLE, will be great, once it has got all repairs done 👍 😊

Great purchase! I'd love to own one of these too, also for nostalgic reasons I guess. Personally I like the spec of this example. I am VERY surprised though that it's carbureted, but typical for a British car I guess, in Holland the GLE designation is reserved for the top spec fuel injected model. Also seems very odd to me that you're able to pass an MOT without working odometer.... One things for sure, you can't kill the motor in these, extremely reliable engines, pulls nice and full of character.

Good car Chris, I would have driven it back to Fife from Pickering, providing I knew that the timing belt was reasonably new. Those 2 litre engines would get you anywhere as long as the timing belt has been replaced. My dad's C reg 360 GLE timing belt snapped right on the 4 years anniversary when I had already bought the genuine Volvo replacement for fitting. It bent a valve and when being repaired we had the double cylinder head gasket modification done to allow it to run on unleaded fuel.

Had a silver 84 GLE saloon (A211CUX) in the family in the 90's - earlier B19A with 92hp and Stromberg carb - from 37k miles to well over 140,000 as I recall. Tin worm got the better of it, but what a comfortable cruiser- no power steering so was heavy to park but just lapped up the miles. It went everywhere with us kids, and apart from one torn carb diagram it never failed to get home. The Redblock really made the 360 what the 340 should have been with the massive low down torque and high gearing - a good thing really as it had lost interest much more than 4500rpm, but an indicated 100mph was 3500rpm. Would dearly have loved a late 89 GLT hatch with PAS. The thing in the day was to transplant the B230FT from a 740 or 760 = instant 180hp from the factory and many many smiles.

I had a white 343 DL(?) 1.7. Surprising quick. Like driving a bus while sitting in an armchair. On tyres close to the limit on ice I fishtailed and missed a cyclist by millimetres. Heart stopping fun ! Fun fact : Don't jack up the back using the diff as my Volvo main dealer did or it will leak without end.

I had a 343 and 2 360 GLEs, really good cars. I bought them all at 2 years old and sold at 4. All carburettors. After I sold them, they all rusted quite quickly. Never understood why given Volvo's durability. When you do the water pump seals or cambelt, it's radiator out, and that is grille and bumper off, as it's mounted in front of the panel. Dead easy.

Renault. this one got a real Volvo motor not the Renault 1.7 and 1.4? 340's got the Renault shite
@mikemartin2957Ай бұрын
@@markcollins457 it was essentially.a DAF design Daf 66/ Volvo 343 which Volvo took over the car side from Daf around 1976.( Daf truck business continues today). Engine on the 1400 (343) were courtesy of the Renault 12, the later came the 1721 cc ohc unit from the Renault 21 in 1986.. These 360 were VERY desirable because the RED block Volvo very own design ,very torquey + ligh ( though strong ) body+ rear mounted gear box ( Volvos own =lots of RWD fun. 😁
@davidrumming4734Ай бұрын
@@mikemartin2957I believe Volvo revised it twice ? During its life, the 2nd revision possibly in 87 or something…that’s the one where Volvo replaced the entire dashboard. The original 340 only had CVT automatic transmission I think…and obviously very old, crude version. People generally didn’t like it hence Volvo offered a manual transmission as well when they took it over. Has to be remembered, these cars especially the 360 were not budget cars back in their day. This wasn’t in the same pool as say a little ford fiesta.
@mudachuka12345Ай бұрын
Had a 340 1.7 it went through aluminium propshafts like they were going out of fashion. Think the 2.0 Used a better locking mechanism on the prop shaft to prevent wear to the splines on The prop shaft. I think root cause was soft/worn rubber bushings for the de dion axle and possibly the engine mounts. Heavy steering, and rear higher than the front didn’t think it was a good car.
@timbo19751975Ай бұрын
The 1.4 & 1.7 used a naked prop spinning away under the car - the 2.0's all used a torque tube with a steel prop inside bolted to the clutch housing and front of the gearbox - which was why they handled considerably better than the 340's. - and the gearchange didnt move around as you came on and off the power.
