1988 Westfalia Vanagon Van Tour | Van Life in America

My hubs and I bought a 1985 VW Westfalia Vanagon camper van that was only 6 months old from an elderly couple who had intended to travel then health issues cropped up & couldn't. We loved that thing! By camper van standards it was way ahead of it's time. I notice it has way more storage then this model. It was also a popup. We took the kids traveling all across North America & loved every second of it. The memories of our time traveling are so special. My hubs was a handy sort of guy and added all kinds of upgrades that took it up another notch * kept up all the maintenance work. He replaced the engine & transmission a couple times but hell we put hundreds & hundreds of thousands of miles on it. After he passed away I let my sister talk me into selling it claiming it wouldn't be safe for a woman to travel alone. My biggest regret ever was falling for that and letting it go. I'm now looking at van conversions which will cost 10x +++ what we paid for the one we had. Ugh.. just ugh. I so wish I had mine back.

We actually lived in Berlin for 3 years but then looked all over Germany to find our current van Ody. Right now we're in Northern Spain but plan on traveling through Europe all year potentially ending the year back in Berlin. But so hard to know how it will all play out xxx

@@WildWeRoam living in a Van in Germany seems pretty hard to do- mostly for legal reasons- I wonder how you do it?!- It is basically illegal to camp anywhere (even for a few hours) besides campsites and a few parking spaces that allow camping. I do have a 88's VW but I never use it for actual camping- all the management to plan your route to legally camp just kills the fun and the freedom... I am also no fan of the toilette situation :) ...

Lou spent almost a year looking online for our van mainly on ebay kleinanzeigen (its German ebay and has tons of van listings) and as for money. We bought the van with wedding money as we had just gotten married a few months before we started van life. Instead of having a big party we asked our parents to give us what they would have spent on the wedding and then for guests of our small ceremony we asked for cash instead of gifts and it really worked out for us. And then life on the road we make due with our work online and some freelancing here and there. Hope that helps a little! We have more info about our story on our website if youre interested xx Dana

Many years ago I traveled the country in my 1971 VW camper van. Manual transmission, no A/C but of all the vehicles I've ever owned, the VW camper was my favorite. I would love to buy a new one but VW hasn't exported their camper vans to the USA since 2003. I've also considered buying an older used VW camper. But if you can find one in decent shape, the prices are ridiculous!

I would love to have one of these and there are lots for sale around here. However I'm having a hard time with what the prices are for vehicles that are 30 to 35 years old. My new SUV cost the same! I'm wondering if you can explain why they do cost so much... I'm still open to the idea of buying one.

That van is awesome!! I would love to have one of those but my bank balance says nope! I used to have a 2006 6 seater, medium wheelbase, high top, Transit van that i used as a family vehicle and also for my motorcycle racing. I hoped to convert the back into a type of camper so we could enjoy trips out during the summer, but It never happened and i sold it. I really miss it now :(

Did you replace the headlights? a 1988 Vanagon would've had rectangle headlights.... they stopped doing circle headlights in 1985

I realize that the small amount of fridge space would require you to eat food that does not perish or go off in the heat (cans of food, rice, other dry/dehydrated foods etc) but I have not seen you guys eat meat or stews in any of your videos.
