According to Zakspeed boss Erich Zakowski in Zakspeed Club Info #13 (December 06, 1989), Brunner had a very limited role in the design of the 891: "Gustav Brunner left for Leyton House March. I would like to say the following to you, who may also be asking yourselves this question: Gustav Brunner was not our design engineer, as is often claimed, but our Technical Director. As such, he had the primary task of providing Zakspeed with a higher level of technical competence overall. Unfortunately, Gustav very often stayed in his office in England and was too seldom here on site. He was also used to having a large technical staff behind him at Ferrari. As a very small team, we naturally could not offer him this luxury. Since our mutual ideas could not be realized, we parted company again. As far as the design was concerned, Brunner had only reserved the design of the transmission. The car was drawn by former Ferrari designer Nino Frison, and Heinz Zöllner carried out the wind tunnel tests. Both still belong to Zakspeed."
