The man with the white hat and mustache behind Ascari at 14:14 is my grandfather Tino Martinoli. He was a mechanic on Ferrari’s racing team. So cool to have him immortalized in the history of this great sport.

A tour de force of F1 history. Thank you for your cyclopedic knowledge of the sport. Back in 1968 I remember getting my motorcycle helmet signed by Emerson Fittipaldi when going to Kyalami on a Wednesday afternoon after school. We rode right into the pits and all the drivers were having tea. (You can’t do that today!) I asked Emerson for his autograph and he grabbed my helmet and signed it. All the other drivers ragged him by shouting “Emerson!” together. One thing I did not know was that Gunston was the first cigarette company to sponsor F1. The brand was famous in SA with all their sponsored cars painted in “Gunston Orange”. The racing Ford Capri Piranha was iconic at the time. Thanks once again!

But I have started to really get into F1 lately, and I wanted to learn about the history via a long documentary-style vid. Most videos I found were pretty good, but only reached 20-30 minutes. Thirty years ago, Niki Lauda told us 'take a monkey, place him into the cockpit and he is able to drive the car! Thirty years later, Sebastian told us 'I had to start my car like a computer, it's very complicated! And Nico Rosberg said that during the race - I don't remember what race - he pressed the wrong button on the wheel. Question for you both: is Formula One driving today too complicated with twenty and more buttons on the wheel, are you too much under effort, under pressure? What are your wishes for the future concerning the technical programme during the race? Less buttons, more? Or less and more communication with your engineers?

I have to say this video is a massive achievement. I was born the year Formula One started. So this almost feels like my life trajectory! One point that you might've made but didn't. In the 2007 Chinese Grand Prix, McLaren left Hamilton out a couple of laps too long before the tyre change. His tyres were completely bald and on the entry into the pit lane he slid off into the gravel and could not be pulled out. If he had continued and stayed the same place on the track he would've become champion. Because of those lost points, he lost the championship to Räikkönen by one point. When you add this to the disgraceful way the 2021 championship was stolen from him, he should have been a nine times world champion by now,

the '94 Season was very special and what's missing from the video is that the Benneton of Schumacher was down on power from all other cars, it had a V8 engine compared to the V10 in Hill's Williams and Ferrari's V12, what Schumacher did that year was truly outstanding in an era where there was no engine dominance over all rivals on the grid.

Yep Schumacher using his broken car to ram into Hill was truly outstanding, The fact that he was allowed to do that and still keep the championship was the final straw for me, Schumacher did a load of shady shit that would of seen any other driver stripped of points and/or banned and it was enough to make me give up on F1.

@@NB-TB Really, must be hard to be such a hypocrite, Shumacher was in front and had the right to close the door on Hill, and the fact that Hill took Shumacher off on 3 separate occasions after that including Silverstone and Coulthard took Shumacher off in spa, the year his team mate Hakkinen won by 2 points, But both Hakkinen and Alonso both praised Shumacher as being the best driver in F1, you are such a Hypocrite.

I remember him telling me about how he was able to catch the first ever F1 race at Silverstone, on the radio live as they didn't have a TV. He was 7 years old. Of course us guys are influenced by our dads, so he took me to my first F1 race in 1987 when i was 10. We are die hard Tifosi of course. Ferrari is our team, always has been, always will be. I named my son Enzo! I watch every race with my son. We go to at least 1 race a year. we went to Monza in 2024 and watch Charles win! F1 has given me some of the greatest memories i have in my life. with my dad, with my son.

As a tip to get more people to see this, you could divide it in to separate video's for each 'era'. Not everyone goes and watch a 3 hour long (amazing) documentary about F1 history. Great video. Should be "required reading", so to speak, for new F1 fans. It's also a very sobering look at the sport for sure, when you look at the darker moments. In terms of most embarrassing moment, I would submit that the last race of 2021 was much higher on the scale than the Indy debacle. At least there, rules were followed, though it lead to a weird situation. In most prior controversies, it was teams doing something shady and against the rules. In Abu Dabi, it was the actual officials doing it!

The first World Championship Grand Prix at Silverstone in 1950, Ferrari weren't there, the organisers probably didn't offer enough starting money to make the trip worthwhile for Enzo's team, they did however compete during that first season

Quite rightly, the British contribution to the proliferation of the sport of motorracing is really quite astounding. Post-World War Two, (officially from 1950) the reformation of Formula One as the pinnacle of the sport has seen 10 Britons, (5 have already passed on), as F1 Grand Prix World Championship Winners, 21 times. 1.1958-Mike Hawthorn*** 2. 1962-Graham Hill*** 3. 1963-Jim Clark*** 4. 1964-John Surtees*** 5. 1965-Jim Clark*** 6. 1968-Graham Hill*** 7. 1969-Sir Jackie Stewart 8. 1971-Sir Jackie Stewart 9. 1973-Sir Jackie Stewart 10. 1976-James Hunt*** 11. 1992-Nigel Mansell 12. 1996-Damon Hill 13. 2008-Sir Lewis Hamilton 14. 2009-Jenson Button 15. 2014-Sir Lewis Hamilton 16. 2015-Sir Lewis Hamilton 17. 2017-Sir Lewis Hamilton 18. 2018-Sir Lewis Hamilton 19. 2019-Sir Lewis Hamilton 20. 2020-Sir Lewis Hamilton 21. 2021-Sir Lewis Hamilton ***deceased

Great video. I've only been watching F1 since the last part of 2020. I don't even really have a team I support right now, but I'm excited to see Audi on the grid. Great to see the history of F1 and after watching Drive to Survive and the Brawn GP show, I feel like I have some knowledge of F1 now. I'm mad I missed the V10 times. I wish F1 would ditch electrification and let the teams develop more high revving ICE's.

I started watching F1 in 1984, and I watched virtually every race live on television until the end of the 1996 season. The 1980's was my favourite decade of F1. Along with the very early 1990's. I must admit that I don't watch F1 now. Its gotten too technical for my liking, and it seems like the safety car is being deployed every 5 minutes. There's certainly no race without it being used nowadays. Along with ridiculous penalties and rules.
