1989 Baltimore Orioles: "Why Not?"

This music video is from the VHS documentary of the 1989 Baltimore Orioles.
The 1988 Baltimore Orioles started the '88 season 0-21 and finished that year with a record of just 54 wins, and 108 losses. So when the 1989 season began, no one gave the Orioles a chance to even compete. But the young and hungry Orioles had something to prove, going 87-75 and finishing just two games out of first place in the American League East. During that season, the term, "WHY NOT?", was coined by Oriole fans, and it has lived with us since that magical season.

I remember the 88 season and how dismal it was to be an orioles fan for about 3 years and then the why not team came out of nowhere exceeding expectations and showe the oriole way is the best way to play baseball. This 2012 team is playing pretty good too. Buck Showalter has changed the culture of the team. If they tighten up on defense and strikeouts they could make a serious run at the playoffs. Lets Go O's!

2012 was a great year, and I'll never forget the first sentence in the preseason write-up for the O's in ESPN the Magazine: "This is a 100-loss team." They really pegged that one.

Close but no cigar. Certainly one of the most memorable seasons in Baltimore Orioles baseball history. Just goes to show everyone how much harder it was to get into the postseason before the wild card era. Hell, just look at KC and California from that season. Both teams won over 90 games and didn't even make the playoffs.

My dying wish, it appears (don't worry, I'm not dying, but if I were this would be it), is to once more view the closing of this '89 highlight tape, specificallly - listening to Lou Rawls belt out the lyrics to Wind Beneath My Wings as Cal steps to the plate. Is there enough O's magic out there in the night that this may be possible?

Don't look now but the Os are at it again. After losing over 100 games last year they were given 0.0 percnet chance to make the playoffs by fangraphs this spring they are 1 game out of a playoff spot today 9/9/22

Yes, 1989 was a great year for the Birds of Baltimore. Let's hope that 2012 can be just as fun as 1989. I'm not asking for an World Series crown or even a wildcard birth in the playoffs, just make baseball in Baltimore fun again! Why Not?

I was going by the "Power Rankings" of all the MLB teams. The only team ranked worse was Houston. I know The Astros are in the NL but lets be honest, The O's proved all the experts wrong this year!

why not? because the orioles were not the best team in the a.l. east in '89. toronto underachieved and the o's overachieved so it was close.
