1989 & Falling: Mount St Mary's Abandoned Irish Catholic Church Leeds

Attended the adjacent infants and junior school in the fifties. Then it was a vibrant Catholic community with the large church packed every Sunday. The nun's convent was also part of the complex and they served in the schools as teachers. Sister Philomena was the head and she put the fear of God into us kid's at the time. She was at least 6ft tall dressed head to toe in black, fearsome but a good teacher nevertheless. Demographics brought about MSM's decline and eventual closure, with most Catholic families moving out to the new council estates on the outskirts of Leeds, like Swarcliffe and Seacroft. Wonderful memories of a beautiful church.

Thanks. It can be bit confusing for many outside Leeds Catholic Community understanding the jurisdiction elements of separate religious orders as opposed to Leeds Diocese. In MSM case, priests were OMI and Sisters were Holy Family of Bordeaux. Worse case scenario in situations like this would be priest wallops a boy very hard for misbehaving in the pews, boy cries to nun, but nun says, not my problem, you need to talk to head priest, nothing to do with us sisters. Sounds familiar to underhand tactics in the outsourced employment sector.

Ps. Sorry my local history here isn't very good. Am guessing before your generation it was slums clearance that caused earlier flock to switch to Corpus Christi, Saint Augustines etc after moving to both Halton Moor and Gipton.

It isn't your high school, it's the remains of the church from where it takes it's name. What is inside the school is entirely separate.
