1989 Mercedes SL R129 - Bruno Sacco's masterpiece

The world premiere of the new 129 series SL in March 1989 belonged to the main attractions of the Geneva Motor Show. The new types 300 SL, 300 SL-24 and 500 SL showed no common features with their preceding models except for their overall concept. Just like 18 years before, when the 350 SL demonstrated a great number of innovative construction details in automotive progress, the 129 series SL now also was a completely new car.
The new SL generation convinced by a harmonic and very successful stylistic shape. It expressed dynamics, sportiness, but also comfort and elegance. On the one hand, the design presented itself traditional, on the other hand, its new solutions of many details looked far into the future. Thus, for instance, the radiator grill, the legendary trade mark of the SL models, had been newly interpreted on the basis of remaining traditional shapes. In contrast to the preceding types, where the broad chrome frame and the star were dominant, the radiator cowling was now organically integrated into the engine bonnet. The star, now the only chrome decoration of the car, had been completed by horizontal lamellas of anodized aluminium.
The SL's technical equipment was a combination of innovation and tried-and-tested technology. Its suspension was fundamentally the same as that of the 201 and 124 series. Thus the new SL models also had spring-damper struts at the front and multi-link suspension at the rear, guaranteeing outstanding ride and roadholding. Many components had to be adapted for the SL and axle geometry was also specially tuned.

I love this car, i myself own an SL500. I was 7 years old when it came up. The only sad news is that at the time such a masterpiece was only available for rich poeple. World is a strange place :(....

10:33 Wait did MB ever sell an R129 with a glovebox or is this just a concept model? I was under the impression they all had passenger airbags instead. (I know all US spec ones had no glovebox.)

Yes, they did. I have a 1989 500SL with driver airbag but a glove -box where the passenger airbag would be located

Der SL 500 ist sicherlich dynamischer :) Der SL 320 ist wirtschaftlicher. Viel hängt von Ihren Vorlieben ab. Es ist besser, eine Probefahrt durchzuführen.

Bruno Sacco did not design the R107. It was designed by Joseph Gallitzendörfer and Friedrich Geiger.

I have been extremely blessed, to own two phenomenal Mercedes Benz SL’s, a Pearl black 1987 560 SL from 1987 until the Spring of 2004. loved that automobile, , for which I will always have ‘Sellers remorse’, and a Special ordered 2002 Mercedes Benz SL 500, that I purchased in December 2004, with 9300 miles on the odometer, owned by a Mercedes Benz Collector, who paid a $1,000 to ‘Get It his Way’. Yes, this gorgeous, timeless, built and created by a much respected ‘Car guy’, as was my 560 SL, and I love Every minute, Every mile, that I’ve experienced in them both…but the 2002, Is Definitly the 2nd best SL ever built 1/ the 300 SL 2/ the R129 SL and 3/ the forever beautiful 107 Series SL, that Is still a Dream car for many. Every time I/we take the 2002 SL 500, out for a drive, It Is truly an exceptional experience, one that I Hope to enjoy, for many more Mercedes Benz, dealer serviced miles…you should see the heads turn, Every time it goes in for its Annual service, and the praise is ongoing. I went thru some heavy health Issues, a few years ago, and almost sold the SL 500, thankfully, tthat transaction did not happen 🙏🏽 I close with my most Sincere, Respectful, Appreciative Thanks to Bruno Sacco, for sharing his gift with those of us who deeply appreciate, and love ‘The Best of The Best’, also known as Mercedes Benz automobiles, of his design.

Also die Vorlieben , sind cruisen , und bei Bedarf auch sportlich fahren zu können , und da sind, die Meinungen zum 320SL eher verhalten bzw negativ ( träge und schaft auch die 240 Km/ h Höchstgeschwindigkeit NICHT) ?! 231 PS und wenig Leistung ??!

Ich würde den SL 320 nicht mit dem M 104-Motor als sportlich bezeichnen, besonders aus heutiger Sicht. Dies ist ein Auto für eine ruhige Fahrt.

Der Werbefilm wirkt blutleer und hohl. " Im Spannungsfeld zwischen Harmonie und Dynamik. " Zwei Kategorien, die erstmal unterschiedlich sind. Beide widerstreben einander doch keinesfalls zwangsläufig. Sie können durchaus Hand in Hand gehen. Hängt doch sehr vom Schöpfer eines Objektes ab, ob beide Kategorien ein Spannungsfeld ausbilden. Außerdem sind superlative Beschreibungen wie "unvergleichlich" erstmal arrogant und damit auch sehr unsympathisch. Sein Produkt loben ist ja in Ordnung, aber ob es im Vergleich zu anderen obsiegt sollte man tunlichst dem geneigten Käufer überlassen. Der entscheidet mit seinem Kauf welches Produkt am Ende das am meisten geschätzte ist und keineswegs der Erbauer.

I’m definitely not for Bruno Sacco design. I find this model a very poor successor of the beautiful R107.
