Fun video back then, hilarious video now - as the 1989 Permian Panthers memorialize their state championship, as well as earn redemption from their Friday Night Lights 1988 loss to Dallas Carter, with this 80's boy-band hit.

The biggest high school generations were 90s to early to maybe mid 2000s 5a high schools in Texas. They were freakish big and looked like 30 year old guys, I noticed a decline in size (I'm not talking about height but size and development) in the late 2000s. And an extreme decline as the 2010s started and went on. The weirdest thing about gen z is that they aren't lighter in weight per se than other generations. But yet alot smaller and less developed as a whole. It's weird.

@@Ljcast956 they recruit from other cities in Texas and I know this for a fact. They buy the families home in the west lake bee caves hills promising the families a beyond nice home and guaranteed starting and play time. When I was in school we got stomped by them everytime, they’d have 6’4 freshman quarterbacks that’d literally chop block you everytime. Ain’t no way teams go undefeated close to 4 years without the best players available. Again I know they recruit as I know a couple families that have been moved from a couple of the towns outside of atx to west lake to play. That’s not even fair.

No parade, but we did have an assemble in the school auditorium, and ESPN Scholastic Sports America showed up to award us the mythical national championship. A clip of it is in the first part of this video. I never understood why Comer was not more sought after. Recruiting was different back then...if you didn't have the size and other metrics, D1 never looked at us...historically Permian had always been small and scrappy, and so once Boobie Miles got hurt, I guess the recruiters just gave up on any RBs we had. I knew Stoney was going to be good in junior high. He had the height and arm, but he also had calm nerves and could handle the pressure of Mojo QB1, much better than his predecessor in FNL.

I graduated in 1993 from Permian and all yall that talk shit about permian...understand videos like this gives older guys like me to look at ourselves when we were growing up. I know thats hard for sum of yall that grew up in the "internet days" to understand. I can honestly believe that this world would be better off if it was not invented.

I read Friday night lights my freshman year of high school in the fall of '97. Never imagined that there would be movies and a TV series made about it. I've been fascinated with Permian ever since.

Ahh the good ole days of real high school football where you had the powerhouse public schools with the likes of Odessa Permian, Cleveland St. Ignatious, Massillon, Canton McKinley, Berwick high of Pennsylvania and to name a few more. Not this BS Mater Dei or IMG Academy who recruit players. Just a strong city small community who bred these kids and have played together since grade school..

back then, it was before President Bush signed the law that you could go to other high schools out of your district. Back in the 80's you had to go to high school where you lived. There was no recruting. Your family had to move into the district if you wanted to go to certain school.

eh...not really. Stuff like this becomes a lot easier to do on the heels of a state championship! I don't think we'd have done it if it was just a post-season video after not winning the whole thing.

jeffrey patterson no worries! We are proud of the years of great old school football done the right way. And trust me, if a local TV station offers a bunch of high school guys a chance to be in a "music video" in 1989, they'll be in it no matter what the song! ;-)

mistermojo66 lmao!!! As my high school team in '95 would have too!!! I'm truly envious of you guys for getting to be a part of such a special team and season!!! I've watched a ton of high school football in my life and I go to the state finals here in Michigan just about every year and those teams in Texas in that time period are absolutely jaw dropping!!! So good and so fun to watch the clips!!!! Thanks for posting them and congrats on getting to be part of something so many people like me would sell their soul to experience!!! 👍👍👍💯💯

The noticeable thing is the quickness, and the football IQ. Joe Paterno always taught his teams to go to the ball. This team seems to exemplify that.

@@mistermojo66 My Junior year in HS we outscored our opponents 317-6. The 6 was a deflected Hail Mary before halftime. I submit that this was not Texas 5A ball. Our graduating class was under 100 kids. It was fun though!
