He grew up playing QB, just a sophomore in this game, a rare soph starter for the Panthers. All-league SE / S, went to Texas Tech on scholarship. According to Boobie, he was the best QB in town in growing up but he feels race had a part and that the town wasn't ready for a black QB.

I was at that game and it was the best one all day. I grew up with John Wilson (Arlington's RB) and he was like a 6' 200 lbs white Marcus Allen. Arlington's offensive line had two OU commits and John Wilson committed to Arkansas. They should of won that game, but the "Mojo" occurred. Lamar should of beat Permian the next year, but "Mojo" occurred to another Arlington school. Permian's will to win and not give up was why they beat teams with much more talent. Their teams looked like JV teams against the DFW teams. While some teams would be intimidated back then, Permian never was and felt they could beat any team--minus Dallas Carter. No one truly thought "We're going to beat them" when they got on the field. Carter was a college team for all intents and purposes. Boobie was a junior in this game. It was about the best he'd ever play. No one at Permian cared for him unless he was healthy and could carry the ball. I'm sure his immaturity played into the team and coach's feelings. Thanks to whomever posted this almost 7 years back.

To answer a few common questions: This game occurred in 1987, not in '88. The FNL team profiled was the '88 squad. Also, the announcers were from the local CBS affiliate in Odessa, hence the "homerism". Boobie was a junior here, and not the feature back (which was Crow). Crow racked-up over 2000 yards this season.

I was at this game, it was one of the best I've seen. Permian was down at half time by like 20 points or more but they came out in the 2nd half and played with all heart. Both teams never gave up and it ended in a tie. In those days there was no overtime so Permian won on first downs. I remember the Arlington fans were devastated, they had lead the whole game but lost on tie because they had less first downs..

Miles is a FB! The fact that he had halfback abilities *at all* while still having the size and blocking ability of a full back was revolutionary back then. And like you said, Crow was otherworldly, and that was *because* he had a backfield partner like Miles. Crow was already *very good* as a HB on his own, but with defenses now having to send a few defenders in the FB's direction on *every* play, the field *completely* opened up for him, and Crow absolutely *exploded* that season, totaling almost 2300 yards! *That* was what made Miles so special (not that he was some kind of "football superhero" with the ability to play every position from QB to kicker, like the movie made him out to be)! He was special because he made *the team* so much better just by *being* on the field *with* his unique skill set! Again, Crow was an amazing HB on his own, and undoubtedly averages more than 100 yds per game without a FB partner like Miles (and they played 14 games that season, so we'll say ~1500 total rushing yards for the entire Panthers offense if you sub out Miles for a standard FB at the time). But with Miles on the field, able to do everything a full back does *and* having all the abilities of a HB as well, and even able to average 1400 yards himself *as a full back,* he *completely* broke the game, and turned that ~1500 yard total rushing attack into a *>3500 yard* total rushing attack (Miles' ~1400 yards as a full back, combined with the ~2300 yards Crow was able to run for that season; i.e. still the most by any Panthers player in an entire season)!

He wasn't in the movie. This game took place a year before when the book/movie take place, although the book mentions that they showed highlights of this game at their preseason party of sorts. This is one of the most legendary games in Texas High School Football

I met Shawn Crow when he and I were in the same platoon in the Marine Corps, 1992. He was injured at that time, had a knee injury from a cheap shot in a football game with one of the teams on base. He was very friendly and very humble. Most of the Marines did not know about his football background and he took a lot of verbal abuse for missing a lot of training while being injured. There was a black guy in the platoon who was a constant loudmouth racist..."White boy" this and "white boy" that..... who had heard Crow had played a little college football. He challenged Crow to race him in the parking lot out in front of our barracks. Crow had a huge knee brace on his leg for months from his injury. Crow reluctantly accepted the challenge due to all of the trash talking. Crow smoked this loud mouth asshole. His name was Kimbrough. He was from Indiana. A few weeks later...Crow and I were out on a ride on our motorcycles and we came back to the barracks and these guys, Kimbrough included....had broken into his locker and found the vhs of the Arlington v Permian playoff game. You have to understand how utterly boring it could be in the barracks on a Saturday night. This was before cell phones, internet, etc. Bored like crazy if you didn't have a car to go out into town or if you were broke....between pay days. So these guys got into his locker looking for movies to watch. They find this game and start watching it from the beginning. By the time we walked into the barracks that night, there was probably 20 people from all over the neighboring barracks....all watching this game in our shitty TV lounge. We walked in right as they were coming back at the end and these guys immediately leapt to their feet many of them in tears congratulating Shawn. It was an awesome moment because Shawn Crow was such a good and humble guy and refused to talk shit or even curse when these guys would be very disrespectful to him. This highlight video in no way shows just how much Crow did to bring Permian back from behind....he got the ball a lot more than you see in this video. Everyone in the stadium knew it would be Crow, or else, and Arlington still couldn't stop him. He puked several times in the huddle and willed the team to victory single-handedly. A few months later our unit went overseas but Crow didn't go with us because he was still recovering from his knee injury and I never saw him or talked to him again. He signed my copy of "Friday Night Lights." We took several road trips on our motorcycles. He was open about his Christian faith. Rock solid guy. That's what you need to know about Shawn Crow.

Now, these kids have trouble competing at the state level against Dallas and Houston teams. Also, the oil field has a very transient population. Kids come and go with oil prices these days. As for Permian itself, they are running a Veer offense which is very run heavy. Believe it or not, there are actually kids that are transferring to Odessa High so they can run a pro-style, spread offense and get more looks from colleges.

@@woodsidetj Wow that is crazy. It sounds very reminiscent of DE LA Salle here in Cali. Veer and defense with two way players, but the winning streak and big time games (Mater Dei, Poly, St Louis, Evangel) brought in the athletes. A change in the admin changed the policy by which kids could apply to the school, with kids already in local Catholic schools getting priority over kids from other public school districts. Now DLS still runs the veer and is having trouble attracting game breaking talent like the old days.

This was his junior year.. And he really actually came on late in the season nearly all of his yards came in the last 6 games. Hence the reason he was was getting alot carries early in the game. Also his measurable were similar to eric Dickerson and Marcus Dupree

I see a lot of Eric Dickerson on his running style, a bit upright just looking for that hole to open and turn on the speed. - Marcus Dupree was another matter. Dupree would have been one of the greatest if he had 10 pro years. I read Dupree's quotes he always thought he would get hurt on day.

I coached in Midland in the late 70's and learned first hand what the Mojo magic was. It did not matter how big you were, just how tough. To beat them, you just had to either have an error free game or you were so loaded they could not stay on the field with you. I wanted to go onto the field and yank off their helmets to see how old the players were as it seemed each team was identical to the ones before them.

James Boobie Miles? Forget that! Shawn Crow! My gawd, he's the terminator! He's the hero before the start of Friday Night Lights as Boobie Miles inherited the starting back position from Crow (who left as the Permian legend). Of course, Miles suffered that devastated injury and never lived up to Crow's legendary status. Glad a VHS video of this game can proved how great Shawn Crow really is to Permian football. 1987 > 1988 (the year for that movie's team).

I remember this game vividly. It was my Junior year on the Arlington High Colts, but sitting on the sidelines due to a medical condition that ended my football playing days.. It It had been 31 years since AHS had seen anything close to the success of this season. And who knows how long it will be until the Colts ever get that close again. A lot of people wonder what would have happened, had the Texas UIL instituted a overtime for the playoffs at that time. We had surmised that both teams were so gassed by the 4th quarter, neither team could've survived a full overtime. A gut punch of an ending to a pretty rare season, to be sure. One thing that had always bothered me about the book. While the opening chapter started with this game, H.G. Bissinger fashioned us to be some sort of racists, which was, and is patently untrue. It simply did not happen. These Colt players were my friends, and some, even 31 years later, still are. They were not, have not, and will never have an ounce of racial hatred in them. But, if you're going to write a book about Luke Skywalker, I guess you have to have Darth Vader in there, somewhere.

I played QB for Denton High at the time and I remember Jon Bates was dating a girl from our golf team. He drove down to one of our bonfire parties and said Sean Crow was literally possessed and couldn’t be stopped. It later came out he was so hopped up on painkillers, he couldn’t feel a thing. One thing you gotta remember about Texas Ball, these teams are HIGHLY separated by student size. At the time, the largest schools were called 4a, the largest now is called 6a. My school in 79 was 4A and graduated 660 kids. Permian and Dallas Carter and here Arlington would be that size. That is not to say, these larger schools play better ball than large schools in other parts of the country. But in Texas, we have over 1,000 high schools. Over 160K kids play football in Texas. So right away, at any top tier, in 87 that was 4A, they have TONS of student athletes to pick from. My school has 37 Pro Football players that graduated. In this video, when he said Odessa was outweighed by 70 pounds per man?? That is an example of how large the schools are, more big guys to suit up. Sure Odessa is just as large student body size but it's stuck out in the middle of no where. Every single kid in that town and surrounding area attends school there. Arlington has 7 other high schools within 10 miles that are just as big. As a last note, my school suits up 3 full 9th grade squads, separate cheerleaders and all. It's very competitive .....

The best high school player I have ever seen in person is Darren McFadden from Oak Grove High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was the only good player on that team. I would love to have seen him on a state ranked team with good blocking and a good defense. The fact that he scored as many touchdowns as he did with a 180 pound offensive line speaks volumes for what kind of athlete he was. He played safety on defense, returned kicks, and played receiver, running back, full back, and quarterback on offense in the "wildcat" formation. He could throw it, keep it, hand it off etc. In high school Darren was 6'1" 190 pounds. His freshman year at Arkansas he was 210 pounds. The way boobie miles plays reminds me of watching darren.

Thanks for posting, very exciting comeback victory. I remember reading about this game in Friday Night Lights. The only other video I have seen of Boobie was on the DVD extras in the movie, and Gary Gaines' show after the season ending loss the next week. The movie itself I found rather disappointing. It would be cool if somebody produced a documentary following Friday Night Lights, not just the football team, but all the other issues discussed in Odessa at that time.

Yes yes yes I was thinking the exact same thing. We don't see football like this anymore. These kids today have no idea what real football is. I never thought I would say this, I always thought that Humanity would keep excelling, but as with football everything is in Decline. We no longer go for greatness. In fact greatness and great achievement is frowned upon in today's world where we give out participation trophies to the losers. Or in fact we don't even keep score anymore. The future used to be a bright star to look forward to, as we wondered what great things the future would bring. But now sadly the future is in Decline and we must Look Backwards for the truly great achievements of mankind. And football is but a microcosm of what has happened to the world. A world where greatness and merit mean nothing anymore period where hard hits are now illegal. You know when watching football today that no matter how proper the hit is if it just looks hard there's a flag coming. Sadly men may no longer be men. As being a man will result in a penalty flag.
