The race that got me into cycling in 1989- reading about it you learn that Guimard knew Greg was on his knees about 6k from the finish- simply because of that swinging cadence and slight shoulder drop. Laurent said he regretted not putting the smash on him further out after what happened in paris a few days later. RIP Laurent and Greg is the true American superman. Love them both. And Delgado and the PDM boys- my Era

@ArloJohnson Yeah, I'm trying to figure out why I have to go back 30 years to watch clips of the tour to make me smile WIDE!! Holy Smokes! What legends these guys were. This was the muscle car era of the tour...

It is likely that Greg LeMond's out-of-the-saddle, pounding "sprint" up to the line at l'Alpe d'Huez contributed greatly to his legendary 1989 Tour de France victory. This is the image for the ages. He won it right here. Tongue- out and everything. Instead of losing the Tdf by several minutes, he won by eight seconds. It was done right here. Pure Heroism. Hero!

Lemond shows the intensity of racing, by being upset he missed the food. A support rider will be bringing up food for him. Even if the team rider has to give up his own food, the team leader must have any resources available to him. In the event no teammate is close, a rival team rider may share with any other rider.

Nope, the only time a rider wears the yellow jersey is when he is in the lead of the race or in the prologue or first stage if he won the previous year. However, he gets a yellow stripe on the cuff of his sleeves for all subsequent TDFs . A former world road champ gets rainbow stripes on his sleeves in all sanctioned road races until he retires, but only wears the jersey for that season.

In 1989 Theunisse was p.o. that time with the PDM team and took matters into his own hands, attacking on the Galibier, the first climb of the day. Theunisse went on his own and rode on to the finish. "On the last climb I couldn't see anything any more. It was like a black tunnel." Theunisse did a h@ll of a job that day. I will never forgot this solo ride of Theunisse. It's one of the greatest moments for me of all Tour the Frances i've seen. Bedankt Gert-Jan.

So painful to watch Lemond slogging up Huez. Was it not by then evident to all that high-cadence climbing is more efficient? Charly Gaul, the Angel of the Mountains, was doing it back in the ‘50s.

Proper cycle racing, this! Not the crap they pass off as racing these days, two way radios, TV's in cars, no one takes a leak without talking to the DS.. Real TDF died after Indurain quit... Lemond and Fignon was possibly one of the best Tours ever

Hey guys, what a faboulusly insane stage: Galibier from the south, Croix de Fer and Alpe d'Huez. Holy shit! Lance would have get into a lot of trouble have he been there...
@johntechwriter5 жыл бұрын
Were he in his doping prime on this stage, Armstrong would have demolished the field. Were he riding clean he would be mid-pack.

Amazing that someone didn't get the feedbag to greg, or maybe wasn't allowed to outside the feed zone. You can't survive that stage or any of them without your foodies!

Posey, himself an interesting character, delivered corn-ball commentary that showed what a rube he was when it came to cycling.
