1990-09-30 Denver Broncos vs Buffalo Bills(Elway vs Kelly)

Repost and re-edit of a game I posted quite recently. Crazy game. Both QBs really didn't play that well and really Buffalo's offense was mostly a non factor but it's defense was a pretty big factor.

I remember that this was the first of three games where the Bills finally proved (maybe to themselves) that they were the real deal. They never gave up, and had consecutive comeback wins against the Broncos, Raiders and Jets.

I remember that run as well. Year before they were dispatched by the Browns after Ronnie Harmon’s drop in the end zone. This year it all came together. Well, almost anyway.

I agree with both of you. This was the 1st Game of 3 that the Bills proved that they were the real deal. That killer instinct emerged vs the team(Broncos) that won the AFC 3 of the last 4 years. This was the changing of the guard game to me where the Bills took the Broncos place as the dominant team in 1990. The Raiders/Jets Comeback Wins in back to back weeks after this game just further solidified the 1990 Bills as a team that finally put it together in the realm of the AFC and was never out of a football game. To the exception of Super Bowls, a Championship Pedigree was firmly established for the 1st time of the Jim Kelly Era. In 1987-1989, the Bills were good and a talented team on the rise but not quite there in consistency/maturity.

Bob Trumpy had been a teammate of Cincinnati QB Greg Cook in the late 60s/early 70s. Cook's promising career was cut short due to a right rotator cuff injury that wasn't properly diagnosed and treated. Cook essentially became a recluse after retiring and suffered from depression over what had happened to his career. Trumpy remained friends with Cook and was one of only a few people he kept in contact with until his passing in 2012

That year the Broncos lost 7 games in which they led after half-time. Turnovers were the big problem that year.

Me too. I remember going nuts as a 10 year old kid when Bennett ran back that blocked FG for a TD...and then going even more crazy when Leonard Smith picked off Elway and ran it all the way back. Then the strip sack and fumble recovery by Bennett. Man what a wild finish. Revenge for the Monday Night game in 89 when Denver came into Buffalo and won 28-14

I dont understand how that is "ironic". Overall, he was a great kicker. He shouldn't have had to be put in that situation. Kinda how Bill Buckner was crucified by Red Sox fans when they had a Game 7 after that game and blew it. Boston wasnt buying World Series Titles or trying to. :)

@@DaveAnchovies Compared to offensive & defensive players kickers ONLY have 1 job which they practice REPEATEDLY the entire 16 game season that's why their teammates & respective fans of their team loathe when they shank or miss field goals in crucial moments of big games but alas we're ALL only human after all.

Norwood was a sub-standard kicker. His opening kick-off barely reach the 10 yard line. I know he has some good statistical seasons behind but he lacks of leg power.

This is the game in which a hit beat the goal line had Thurman Thomas to be legitimately “scared” of Dennis Smith, but I’m not sure if its here in the cut up package. Anyone seen it?

The Broncos had maybe the best tandem of safety's in the NFL at that time. Dennis Smith and Steve Atwater were both big hitters and also both Pro Bowlers. In Super Bowl 32 Atwater hit the Packers receiver and his own guy so hard he knocked them both out along with himself. I'm a Bills fan but Atwater was one of my favorite players in the NFL back then that didn't play for Buffalo. So was John Elway
