8方向レバーで移動、ショットとボンバーに2つのボタンを使用する。アイテムにより3種類の攻撃を使い分けることができる。同社タイガーシリーズ同様にパワーアップが派手だが、調子に乗っていると穴などに落ちて死んでしまうのが悲しい。
ストーリー:
宇宙開発が進み地球人類は他の多くの惑星生命体と同盟を結び銀河同盟を拡大させていた。同時に人類自身も何度となく外部からの侵略を受けたが、そのたびに力を合わせて戦い勝利をおさめてきた。しかし、西暦2095年、地球侵略を開始したオワギラ星人は人類よりもはるかに強力な戦闘力を持っていた。いま、人類は地球の危機に瀕している。そんな時、銀河同盟長老から国連に一つのメッセージが送られてきた。銀河系のはずれのアウトゾーンと呼ばれるどこの同盟にも属さない領域に金で戦闘を引き受ける超A級部隊が存在すると言うのだ。彼らの話は「宇宙仕事人」として古くから銀河伝説に語られている。国連は最後の望みをたくし地球予算のほとんどをかけて彼らに救援を依頼した。一方、彼らの中にも地球を故郷に持つ二人の強力なサイボーグ戦士がいた。地球の危機を知った二人が今、敢然と立ち上がった。

A vertically scrolling run and gun game, in which the player controls a soldier who must fight his way through 7 increasingly difficult levels. At the end of each level a boss must be defeated before the player can progress any further.

- TRIVIA -
Released in August 1990.
Several characters from other Toaplan games make cameo appearances as powerups or bonuses :
* Six plane squadron from "Flying Shark" fly on the screen shooting enemies in an upside down V shape pattern.
* The "Truxton" ship follows the player helping out.
* ZIG-01 from "Zero Wing" flies on the screen dragging a bunch of '5000' points bonuses.
* Pipiru, Toaplan's mascot from "Zero Wing" can be summoned in level 1 from shooting a hole in a rock. It is vulnerable to all weapons, but it will bring a significant score bonus if safely taken to the level's boss.
Pony Canyon / Scitron released a limited-edition soundtrack album for this game (Out Zone, Snow Bros. - PCCB-00044) on 21/10/1990.
Out Zone new version uses different enemies in some stages and has extra bonuses compared to the old version. The music sequences are also in different orders between the sets.

* Hidden Functions : If the 'Invulnerability dip switch' is enabled, you are invulnerable but you may also 'Pause' the game with P2 Start and restart with P1 Start.

Detana Twinbee with Outzone music is a hoot and a howl as it basically shows that there is really nothing lighthearted about the Twinbee franchise at all.

Looks like that Toplan was inspired by the movie Universal Soldier. Cause in the movie have to keep the reanimated soldiers cool, not that they overheaten. Here in the game is it similar, have to keep the health, which run low by itself. The chracter looks also like Dolph Lundgren from the movie.

Actually it not random. You see, i managed to spawn them two times between various playthroughs and (AFAIK) you need to be at a certain distance of the screen and by blowing almost every tree except two, you'll spawn the Flying Shark planes.

Blowing every tree except for two hey, well I’ve destroyed every tree and sometimes the shark planes arrive and sometimes they don’t therefore it is random just like when u see that jet appear across the screen on certain stages barring the first one.
