I just want to take a moment to thank the cameraman for spending all his money on the video camera, which seems to be a very high quality unit, rather than spending it on the very noisy rattling and squeaking Volvo they are in. But all jokes aside, thanks for the ride down memory lane. I met my future wife in the same year. I really do miss Calgary being more simplistic. At least I was able to hug the tower before they built all those buildings around the base of it.

Kevin, thank you for the kind words. Yes, my Volvo wagon was squeaky and rattled, but it served me well, my camera, now long forgotten did it's job. I'm delighted to you enjoy the footage. I have plenty more raw footage of Calgary waiting to be digitized and uploaded. Calgary continues to evolve and grow, one day, the Calgary Tower will likely be hemmed in with views reduced to looking at office and condo towers. Enjoy the memories.

@@ReelLifeCanada I'm absolutely elated that the person who filmed this posted it, I personally want to thank you for such an awesome video. like the above post said, the camera footage is quite high quality for those times. i' m age 48, and male, i guess there is a stereotype out there about men not liking change, I fall in to that stereotype. Your video's are emotional for me and I thank you for making them.

You'd hope a building or a bridge would last at least 30 years. The real shame is the lack of improvement over our poor infrastructure and urban design.

Except the major Main Water Pipe north of 16th Avenue North of Shouldice Park at the Bowness Safeway parking lot to expire and leak in June 2024 which was installed in 1975 with 5 more trouble spots to be repaired leaving Calgary in a precarious water shortage situation, with the 6 foot plus diameter main pipe lasting one year short of 50 years of dependable service!

Watching this I suddenly miss the good old station wagons that are everywhere! They certainly had their place!
@entropybentwhistle

SUVs are the station wagons of the 21st century. The extra height in the storage space is more useful, and having something with AWD or 4WD is a necessity in Cowtown.
@agems56

@@entropybentwhistle Yea right! At least station wagons and any other car of that era could pull trailers of a decent size, so you didn't need to buy a $80000 truck to pull one, and not too many SUV's will fit something like 4X8 sheets of plywood, not to mention a lot of pickup trucks either, because the box is usually too short, even for a camper And rear wheel drive was all I needed in the good old days in Calgary when winters were cold and slippery, and we did just fine as we drifted around curves without a worry or white knuckles in the world!

Calgary's hell started after the 1988 Winter Olympics when the flood gates opened up and detrimental population explosion happened with cookie cutter box house districts popped up all over the place, and character designed houses and bungalows disappeared! I witnessed all of this, being born here and raised for over 65 years! The golden sixties were the best with 250000 people, and today were at a bursting 1.7 Million with infrastructure lagging behind, especially with road capacity and public transit woefully inadequate!

I remember that boarded up office building. When the city went into recession in the early eighties, the builder just walked away with it only partly built. It sat that way for years. There were also cases where the hole was dug, and then the builders walked away. There was one one Eighth ave mall that was left like that for ages. I worked in two of the buildings you showed downtown, one no longer there, other one different owner.

At 10:45 you see the words "El Salvador Vencera!" which means "El Salvador Will Win!". This is likely referencing the El Salvadoran civil war from 1979-1992. This stood out to me because my parents in 1990 were in El Salvador, and they actually moved here to Calgary in 1991 fearing that we would not get a good chance at life over there. I was born a month after we landed.

Couldn't disagree more. Calgary's downtown, especially the architecture is world class.
@jbc22112
@jbc22112 2 ай бұрын
@@brianfantana8510 You’re right and also wrong. In my opinion. There are some world class buildings. And then there are buildings that are like from Soviet Russia. And many old character buildings were torn down. Calgary today is not bad at all, but it could have been so much more interesting, that’s how I feel. Because when you look at actual world class cities, you won’t really find ugly cheap housing in the downtown core. Or at least the architecture still fits the aesthetic, even if cheap, but some of the buildings in downtown Calgary are actually ugly and have no aesthetic value.
@jbc22112
@jbc22112 2 ай бұрын
@@brianfantana8510 And the reason I like Calgary from that video more is mostly because there are no condos. I don’t like them very much because they’re mostly generic, it’s not great architecture. They will not be interesting in 50 years. They will be as interesting as those apartment buildings from the 70s. It’s just not great architecture. Stephen Ave has great architecture. And I’m not one of those who despise skyscrapers. I think Calgary has many impressive skyscrapers.
@entropybentwhistle

@@jbc22112Downtown suffered from the 60s and 70s mentality of basic utility concrete and steel structures. In the 80s you start seeing color and glass and exterior design elements, such as the Petro Canada building. Design and aesthetics are core in the newer buildings, like The Bow, with its blue glass and curving structure with criss-crossing X-shaped metal supports. The newer architecture philosophy’s exterior appeal is very likely due to just having better technology, materials and engineering experience to make extravagant ideas possible that would have been unthinkable 30 or more years ago.
@jbc22112
@jbc22112 Ай бұрын
@@entropybentwhistle I love those modern buildings like Bow and I think the skyline overall looks pretty nice and colourful (unlike Vancouver, which only looks nice if you don’t pay close attention). But the idea that they didn’t have the technology in the 60s and 70s, it’s true, but that doesn’t excuse those ugly buildings. It was the mentality as you said, not technology. There are impressive buildings from early 20th century in Calgary, so it’s just too bad that there was a period of time when they stopped caring about how the city looked like visually. There are some really hideous looking buildings in downtown core and it brings the city down. I still like Calgary but it deserves better. It could be really cool city with old and the new.

Lower Deck of Centre Street Bridge was also used in the 1976 film 'Silver Streak'. As you drive down 4th Avenue SW and pass the Westin Hotel, the bar attached known as the Owl's Nest was where the Caesar was born. Didn't know the building that has Supreme Men's Wear kiddie-corner from the Westin was still vacant land back in 1990. 14:11 - Old school AGT long distance billboard was still on side of building before the Grand Theatre until around the early 2000's. Old Calgary Herald building and printing building will be replaced with Brookfield Place many years later too. Glass tower after Bay Parkade on 6th Avenue would house the Federal Government's National Energy Board (now Canada Energy Regulator) 18 months later. No 'potato mashers' between TD Square and Banker's Hall yet. I love the 'The End' at the end of the video.

Calgary was good to me, I have moments were I miss it, I'm old now and said I was going to move back to my home town by age 50, I left at age 47. More likely the result of bring in international help into Calgary to help with the O&G. I find the city to be more intellectual. Maybe that was just my circles. Management consulting to O&G. Cities have their strengths, like Edmonton's impressive river valley or the arts scene, with more musicians, music places, galleries, theatres and the Fringe.
