There was a lot of controversy over the selection of Matt Yates four is 800 m, but he proved his worth in the end. Had a respectable career in British athletics.

Its a shame Coe left the Commonwealth games until the last year or two of his career.

Yes, both him and Ovett waited until 1986 before they first ran in the Commonwealths, and Coe had to withdraw because of illness then.

If I am not mistaken Coe, who could run under 1.45 on any given day, was ill and later withdrew from the 1500m.

Coe had a short career. A great one, but a short one. His 800 WR is the best run I have ever seen. Broke the WR in a real race, going around people. Could have broken the 1500m more than once with better pace making. As soon as it wasn't going all his own way he quit. Wanted to protect his legacy. Although he never sold anything outside of athletics. Got a fortune from Horlicks, but didn't move their sales an inch. My own view of the man is the public didn't like him. Too self centered.

@@SirPeter6464 Wrong, Seb Coe had quite a long career where he was winning major races in 1977 and setting world records in 1979. This 1990 race is 10 years after his 1980 Olympic 1500 meter gold. 13 hears running in major championships is a long career from my view. And on your second point the Public still love him where he is still one of the best respected commentators for major athletic meetings.

@@Vinchiamo Absolutely right. Coe's career at the top level was a long and remarkable one. Even in 1989 he ran a 1.43 800 and won the AAA 1500.

Coe ran an excellent race tactically - he was in perfect position from 300m onwards but was ill so didn't have the finish in him.
