If you wanted to steal something fast, cool and nimble in the early 90s, you wanted Fords small Halo car, the XR2i. I 'borrowed' one to see how good they are.

There must have been about 6 or 7 of these just on my own street in the mid 90s....mostly 1.1 or 1.3 "Popular Plus" and L/LX models. My form teacher at the time had a "posh" 1.4 Ghia version in a vivid metallic green shade which also had electric front windows and seemed pretty nice back then! LOL I guess if you could spring to an XR2i or even better an RS Turbo/RS1800 you would have been the envy of your street. Not like today where every Tom Dick and Sally has a new BMW/Audi/Merc on finance every 2 years!!

Yes my mate had the 1800 R.S Turbo and it went like the clappers. He was only 19 and his insurance must of been through the roof. But his dad owned a HGV logistics company and was loaded so he naturally got looked after. Buying it was the cheap part. Sadly it actually got nicked after about 6 months and he was gutted. His dad was was divorced from his mum told him to park it in the garage every night as “it will get nicked” his dad said. Stupid boy didn’t listen and it got stolen. He looks back now as a 44 years old and realises what s stupid ungrateful boy he was😂

In 1992 I bought a 1989 XR3i EFI ('90 spec) and I absolutely loved it. The velour, the heated windscreen, the Cosworth-style alloys, the electric windows and mirrors and the carphone on the dashboard it came with! It did indeed get stolen several times before I had it totally de-locked! £1500 a year insurance in '92 for third party, fire and theft!

This is the era when cars had style and an identity. Fords knew how to make fast variants of their cars (RS/XR sporty jobs) better than other manufacturers. Oh how I yearn for cars like this, in today’s world where everyone is obsessed with bubble shaped “crossovers” that apart from the badge all look the same. Great video and an excellent comment from Rob Winder 1971.

This reminds me of my Mk3 Escort XR3 Last year I was looking for an late 70's / early 80's car and happened to find a rustfree '82 Mk3 Escort XR3 in sunburst red still with its first owner. (in France) When I bought it, the XR3 was nearly 36 years old, had only 68000km on the odometer and still had the factory original Pirelli tires on the phone dial rims. It also had full french MOT history from 1989 - 2014. Best of all, it is completely free of rust, and has got no signs of any welding of rust repairs. It was one of the last (carburretor) XR3's produced, and already had the 5-speed gearbox installed from factory. My XR3 is actually quite fully specced for an early 80's car. (Radio/Cassette - electric windows - sunroof - tilt rear windows - digital clock and laptimer - heated rear screen - rear whash/ whipe - brown tinted glass allround) Finding a 80's or 90's Ford is quite difficult task indeed. I always remember the Mk4 Escort, Sierra and the Mk3 Fiesta with massive rust patches all over. Luckily for me I actually just stumbled upon my XR3.

Nick The last car I remember with a comfortable, durable, nice looking cloth seat was the Rover 75. I can’t believe the shit people put up with now, nasty looking crap that screams “THIS IS THE CHEAPEST THING WE COULD GET AWAY WITH”. You wouldn’t have in on your sofa, why the fuck would you have it in your car? Interestingly, Toyota Century (their flagship model) customers usually eschew leather seats in favour of...wool. Now THAT’S luxurious!

My first car was a low mileage Austin Metro City 1.0 and when looking to upgrade to a brand new car, I narrowed the choice to either an MG Metro or an XR2 Mk2 (the Peugeot 205 GTi was just too expensive). The MG was only 4 gears so I went for the XR2. Thirty years on, it's still going strong so reckon I made the right choice! The XR2i in this video is a cracker and Ford upped the spec over my model with improved cabin, electric windows, etc. Thanks for posting this.

I had a 1.8l XR2i (K648CAR) that I lavished oodles of money on. Over-bored, Cams, FSE Boost Valve, Ported / Gasflowed, uprated engine components, everything lightened where possible , Superchip, Magnex Exhaust, Jack Knight gearbox and loads of other power mods. 168BHP and 0-60 in approx. 6 seconds. The outside was left completely standard, I hated to see the heavily chopped versions. I part-exchanged it for a Scooby and although the Scooby was technically better in every way I still missed my old Fiesta and soon regretted selling it.

Personally I loved the 205 above all... I take exception to your comments on Dimma's! Not exactly a diy body kit! And worth a fortune nowadays. Plus if talking the Dimma 205, drive one compared to the brilliant standard car.... those wider track Dimma alloys made the car handle even better! I remember getting lifts in one of these mid to late '90s. Ford were masters at glamming up something humdrum in visual, trim etc terms then. Reasonably rapid for the time, but the engine noise was ageing quickly at the time with smooth 16valvers coming in, and I remember the ride as awfully crashy with what looked like a fair dollop of understeer. I was six when this came out, so was a childhood car of mine, grandad had a fiesta 1.3 in 1994 and always wanted to do a xr2i replica with it if he still had it when I passed my test a few years later :) indicator stalks were in Ford's from fiesta, escorts, Ka's, Puma's only the fiesta until 95 had the horn on the indicator stalks every other model had horn on steering wheel

In Aus is the Early nineties Ford gave us the TX3 laser. 1.8l double overhead cam, turbocharged and 4WD, almost 150kw ( with a little extra boost) at less than 1000kg. It was an absolute beast to drive, cornered like it was on rails and wiped the smile off the face of many V8 drivers who thought they owned the traffic light drag strip. The only downfall was the terrible gearbox.

@@furiousdriving It makes sense that there is an English version, that the car was probably based on, just built with local parts, as the Sierra RS500 dominated the Aus touring car scene about the same time ( until the Nissan GTR appeared). You still see them occasionally in Targa/hill climb events

Yay, first time ever I've been the first to hit 'like'. I had a Mk3 Escort Ghia. 5 door, 1.6, inherited from my dad in 1997, and I loved it. It too had velour trim, which was quite posh compared to the awful rough nylon seats in most other cars. I always fancied an XR2i, but as you say, the insurance was crazy expensive for a young 20 something guy. Never really liked the Mk4 fiesta. They too used to rust in a dense fog. But I didnt like the rounded body and dashboard from a Puma.
@furiousdriving
@furiousdriving 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for trying with the like button! I had a base 1.3 Mk3 Escort with rough tweedy seats, actually gave me sores! But after a Laser I made it to a Mk4 Ghia with seats like this and it really felt a bit special. I wanted an Alfa 33 that was for sale near me when I was 20 or 21, but the insurance on that meant was just ridiculous...of course compared to a 17 year old insuring a 1 litre KA now it seems quite good value!

@@furiousdriving You might remember my comment on your Alfa 145 video. I had one almost identical to yours, in the same colour. But mine was a 1.6. Had the black momo interior, and the wooden steering wheel from a 156. So that felt a bit special too. But like a lot of Alfas, it wasn't without its electrical problems. It developed a problem where it would cut out when hot, and wouldn't start again until it had cooled down. I got stuck in the red zone on the south circular because of that exact problem, nightmare. But I loved that little car as it was so unusual.
@furiousdriving
@furiousdriving 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, about the clutch Thats really odd, I had almost the exact same problem with a 33, it didn't cut out, but wouldn't start if the engine was warm and had similar bringing London to a halt episode! One time it stalled at the lights by Vauxhall Bridge and would go again for half an hour..people loved that, hooting while we tried to push it onto the pavement. When I part-ex'd it I had to take a really long test drive to make sure it would start for the salesman! I still loved it, but not enough to stop me swapping it for a bubble shape Rover 200!
